Traditional Kills

In the spirit of Trad hunting, here are a few trad deer kills. I have a Mantis on order and am hoping to do some late season hunting once i recover from rotator cuff surgery that I'm scheduled for next month. I've been using a woodpecker drilling, bolts, and hang-ons for the last 8 years, so a saddle should make it a little interesting. IMG_7730.JPGIMG_7733.JPGIMG_8129.JPGIMG_0414.JPG
Set up:
Bows: 62" to 64" JD Berry, Northern Mist, Sunset Hill longbows (48# - 55# range)
Arrows: Wooden (Surewood Shafts)
Broadheads: Grizzly, Simmons Sharks, Ace
Hunting Method: Woodpecker Drill & Bolts, Lonewolf/Muddy Sticks. LW Alpha Hang-on, Loc On Limit

Nice bucks Chenryiv - good luck with the rotator cuff surgery - I had shoulder surgery in 2017 - not rotator cuff and they said I would be shooting a bow in 3 months - but it took 10 months before I could shoot a bow again!...PT after surgery is the key to quicker recoveries...

I committed my entire season last year to a Trad bow. I shot one hog and one Spike unfortunately recovered neither. I was a bit discouraged at the end of the year and have strongly considered picking up a wheelbow again but just thread makes me think I should reconsider.

Stick with a stick bow, practice a lot and only take close, slam dunk shots. Learning to set up for those shots is part of the learning curve.
I agree 100% with that Ricky. I will say that limiting myself to hunting only with a recurve last year I probably learned more about deer hunting and increase my encounters To a level that I did not know I was even capable of. I had to pass on the largest deer that I've ever seen in the woods in Louisiana last year on public land. As much as I hated to do it I was so focused and on what was going on I learned a lot from that hunt. More than I probably learned from any other.

BTW, how do you edit photos to rotate them?
Impressive!

man this thread is getting my blood flowing. I might have to go bait up a couple spots across the street and see if I can at least shoot a hog this summer
They are great confidence boosters. I highly recommend it. Once my new bow comes in, I'll start texting you daily challenges and we will text back our grouping or what ever the challenge calls for. Its a fun way to practice and put a little pressure on yourself. Maybe we could get a lil group message going with a few of us. We need to get a left handed bow in @huck72412 hands. I'm about to just buy him one. It may help the deer population if we can slow him down.

That's a very profound statement! I have nothing against compounds or those who hunt with them but as I have said before, compounds were invented to make bowhunting easier, not to make you a better hunter. Just like a rifle hunter will usually become a better hunter if he sets aside his rifle and picks up a bow for hunting. The restrictions placed upon him by his equipment is what causes the learning curve to steepen. I feel the same is true for the compound hunter who moves up to traditional gear, his learning curve steepens requiring him to become a better hunter. I often times think that should I ever choose to go back to a compound bow, I would be a killing machine having been a traditional bow hunter for so many years. But I don't see that happening any time soon. It was the lack of challenge the compound provided that drove me from the compound to traditional equipment.

Congratulations to all the successful hunters using tradbows. I can relate to the difficulty as well as the highs and lows that hunting style brings. This is a quick peek at some of my experiences with my beloved Acadian Woods one piece recurve. I hope to add Part 3 sometime this year.

swampsnyper - looks like you've done well with the trad bow ...Once you know a buck is a shooter don't look at his rack anymore and just keep thinking 'its just a doe with antlers' and you'll bust him lol .....

Nice! Good luck with the shoulder surgery. I recommend following through with your physical therapy, especially at home. Hopefully you will be back pokin holes in critters in no time!

A lot of great animals here. I love the trad. I'm shooting a black widow PCH V, 52@28. I haven't shot any bucks yet with it, but I have a handful of does and got my first bear this spring, so I'm pleased so far.
