Treebolts revisited

To find them in the dark simply break off some dried sticks and leave them protruding from each hole. Years ago I had fixed a great spot along a river. Got up super early, used a conoe and paddled downstream, followed my tack trail to the tree, and wound up waiting till daylight to see the holes. That's when I started placing sticks in them.
You'll be sorry one day after a sloshy freeze....

If you have two bolts per foot it isn't bad. If you have stiff steel shank boots it isn't bad.

I was looking into mounting bike pedals onto a couple of bolts but never figured it out

Speaking of! Live from the tree!

Thats how I drilled them the 1st time I ever did them. Found it much easier to climb when they are on opposite sides of the tree or spread out a bit more on big trees. Gave my knees room to climb. Also I found if I try to drill the hole with a bit of an angle, the bit doesn't clean the hole out as it drills and I have to make another pass to clean it up. If you drill them level the shavings can fall out easy as you drill. I use a m16 mag pouch to hold 10 bolts and drill or I just grab some and put in the cargo pockets of my paints. I space them knee high as i go up the tree.

I bet some thick walled hose would work nice.
I'll think about it again. Big Pipe insulation...Bike Handlebar grips... Flatter is better. I was worried that if I got too big, I'd just be better off with my Ameristep Platform on an over center buckle (Which is what I ended up favoring)

Thanks, I've been drilling trees for a year or so, but haven't hunted out of a saddle. Thanks for the info

If you dip another batch, mark the part of the bolt that would be inside the tree and leave it bare. Makes it easy to see that your bolts are all the way in

I stick mine in a drilled hole while at the base of the tree where I can be sure it's bottomed out and hit it with grey spray paint. That way you have a half black and half grey bolt. Easy to tell if it's bottomed out now plus the grey looks better against the tree than the black.

Yeah I think I read that and appreciate the help. I don't want metal on metal noise from the ends tapping together when carrying so I did it this way....I figured I can cut it off later should I need to.

Am I being too noise conscientious and not giving enough thought to safety on this? I'll give up a deer to keep me from falling.

so weird...I got a woodpecker drill the other day...if you want a workout get it, but I need it and my forearms loved it! Could you not just get a regular drill bit...preset it to the depth you need and go to town?

I used a kreg bit with a stop.
