treestand accident

I cut them down when I find them in bad shape. I would rather have a fellow hunter ticked off at me and walking, than leave for him to get hurt. I replace my ratchet straps every year and pins and connecting hardware every three years on ladder stands. It may be overkill, but live to hunt and be there for my family it is a no brainer.

Very sorry to hear that. Been hearing too many stories about accidents with ladder stands. So many falsely believe they are the safest stands out there but in reality they can be death traps. Hate seeing this stuff happen over and over. You can never check your equipment over too much. Your life depends on it.

I found a lean to/ ladder stand this past weekend. Appears it’s been set up on public land for a few years as vines had managed to grow all the way the side of the ladder. Gave it a climb and thankful nothing happen cuz after that climb and reading this, I could see how easily an accident like that could happen. Death trap just waiting to take a life being set up like that. I was half tempted to cut it down.
I'd be tempted to make it unclimbable. Could be an accident waiting to happen for some poor soul. I've seen hunters in ladder stands or in a tree on the limbs. I just shake my head when I see them.

Also i would never climb a stand i found on public or private land. Even if it looks fresh out of the box you don't know how it has been taken care of or what "Mods" have been done to it.

This is another reason why it bothers me to see people leaving stands on public land all year. Some kid might come along, find it and climb up it only to find it has rusted out. I wish game wardens would start cracking down on the idiots that leave stands out on public land year long..... should be a very steep fine for being that lazy.
In Wisconsin they take them and sell them to fund their department. Permanent stands they outright destroy. They will fine you if caught. VA too.

Prayers go out to all affected.

This is a good reminder the dangers are real, and it is our responsibility to take our time and stay focused the WHOLE time in the stand, no matter what our stand preference is.

We've had a pretty wet season here in Virginia and my concern in the stand is always if the seemingly healthy tree uproots, then I need a bail out plan.
