Trotlines

Last time I checked my line it was pouring rain and it has rained pretty much every afternoon since then, been a wet month.... I'm hoping to get a line set Friday afternoon. Ive put together 2 other lines during this wet period.....3 total I have a my disposal now. Those flathead are cool looking fish. Do they taste different from channel cats?

They are more gooder. They also have belly meat and almost like a back strap. We did a side by side and there were subtle but clear differences in the taste.

They are a cleaner, whiter, firmer meat in my experience. Better, but not substantially so in my mind. I think some of the difference is diet. Flatheads are much more carnivorous than channels. But I think our channels here have access to lots of live prey and clean water, so maybe the difference isnt as big?

I may not be the right person to ask though. In my mind, fish is fish is fish.

Catfish for sure....if u have a sheepshead or pompano side by side with a catfish it night and day. All we have are channel and bullhead (never caught a bullhead) and introduced blues but they are west out toward u

Cream of the crop! Congrats.
I picked all my lines up. Been bass fishing.
Yesterday’s catch.

There was a time in my life when that picture would have made me cringe. But as a converted tournament bass fisherman who has fairly recently realized how good large mouth actually taste, it now makes my mouth water. There is a little bit less of guilty feeling every time I eat one. :)

Funny thing is I have no idea why it was ever there, I grew up eating every type of fish there was (except bass).

@huck72412 is the one who converted me to eating them. I bait a few trotlines in the local golf course pond with watermelon seed green zoom worms and tear them up.

@Weldabeast, I have eaten and enjoyed many fish. Mahi, grouper, flounder, snapper, amberjack, crappie, catfish, bluegill, bass...you name it. Some have a better (firmer, flakier) texture, but they all taste about the same to me except tuna and salmon. Bluegill is a little on the sweet side to me, almost like lobster or something. But it's subtle, especially of you just fry it.

I do believe in fresh fish kept cool caught from clean, moving water if possible. Farm pond fish seem to get very mushy and slightly more fishy to me. Aside from that little stipulation, all fish is eatin' fish to me except grinnel. Mainly because I catch a lot of them in what I consider poor water. Shallow, muddy, stagnant, and warm. If I caught a few in a nice, deep creek or river, I might try one out.

I consider myself lucky to have poor taste. Makes life easier. :)

I thought you just had bad taste in beer. Maybe your taste buds are broken altogether.

I know what you mean though. I drank Folgers because I didn’t want to lifestyle inflate. If life ever hits the fan I want to be content with the bottom of the barrel. My dang wife has us sipping espresso, grinding beans and French pressin. It’s some count, but it makes crappy coffee taste crappy.

I can appreciate a nice cup of coffee or a good beer, even if I don't appreciate it enough to spend the money on it routinely. Every now and then I'll go buy a bottle of Chimay. Really, more than money, it's the hassle of procuring some of the "better" brands Every gas station and walmart in the country has Miller lite and folgers, so I'm never dissappinted when shopping somewhere new. My mother always has to go to the little yuppie shops that are open 11-4 5 days a week.

But fish is honestly just fish to me. Kinda like fried chicken. People who get persnickety about popeyes vs cains vs chickfila vs KFC are weird. Same with fish. The difference between the best and the worst just ain't that much difference. Fry it up and hand me a beer that isnt bud lite lime, and I'm happy.

Have u tried? I wonder if I need to carry scissor to help get "unhooked" or just pick and yank
I've done it. It absolutely works. Gar fight furiously for about 30 seconds, then go limp. Fun fish to catch.

Releasing them is tough. I just made a lure for each fish I wanted to catch and kept them. They eat fine if you can get them skinny. Those scales are no joke.

Ive caught some

I have not tried the rope, I simply discovered the video. Ive accidentally caught some gar over the years and have heard of this technique for decades. Long needle nose pliers and maybe a t-handle unhooker might help, with scissors for a backup. If you intend to release them, be sure and unwrap & remove all the rope filaments. Also know that a broken line is probably a death sentence for the gar.
