Trotlines

I wish I could catch walleye or sauger consistently around here. Catfish have to be my go to instead....ugh

Hear you there. I do envy the people that can fish right out their back door. My part of the state sucks for fishing unless you're into catching 10 inch traut which I could never get into. I drive 3-5 hours for most of my fishing (Lake Erie).

Ok well my Louisiana, sportsman paradise, quest continues. Made a few more bass trips and then hit the gulf for some specks. One more trip in the morning then headed on a night thermal hog hunt.
Sorry if I make the bass tournament fisherman cry but we just kept what we needed for a couple fish fries. I understand. I fished them before. Bass are excellent table fare though.

I finally made it home. What a good time! Hog hunting with thermals was a blast. I didn’t know it until that night but my friend’s friend actually guides these hunts for $150 per gun and up to 100rnds of ammo. I told him I’d let some friends know. Some of the scopes they used recorded the footage. I’ll have to upload it to YouTube to share.

Then we took the kids out to run noodles. The 1st run was pretty good then we went back to check them in the morning and the black water out the swamp had ran into the canals and all we had was a few dead fish on the line. No oxygen in that stuff.

@huck72412 is the one who converted me to eating them. I bait a few trotlines in the local golf course pond with watermelon seed green zoom worms and tear them up.

@Weldabeast, I have eaten and enjoyed many fish. Mahi, grouper, flounder, snapper, amberjack, crappie, catfish, bluegill, bass...you name it. Some have a better (firmer, flakier) texture, but they all taste about the same to me except tuna and salmon. Bluegill is a little on the sweet side to me, almost like lobster or something. But it's subtle, especially of you just fry it.

I do believe in fresh fish kept cool caught from clean, moving water if possible. Farm pond fish seem to get very mushy and slightly more fishy to me. Aside from that little stipulation, all fish is eatin' fish to me except grinnel. Mainly because I catch a lot of them in what I consider poor water. Shallow, muddy, stagnant, and warm. If I caught a few in a nice, deep creek or river, I might try one out.

I consider myself lucky to have poor taste. Makes life easier. :)
You might want to try them bluegills filleted up and dropped in a rolling crab boil. Sorta like peel and eat shrimp without the peeling. A little dunk in the cocktail sauce and be careful of your digits that they dont get bit.

We trotline occasionally. Been about 4 years since we have been. Dad loves doing it. We mainly use large minnows, suckers, chubs, and blue gills. Use big bait if you want to catch the 20-50 pound cats. No problem filling freezers quickly if you know how to and when to trotline.

Went out to see if i could get on some hogs opening day of season on my backyard wma. Set 3 limb lines on the way to my spot. Came back and the last one had this little guy on it.

@Bama_Xander, I honestly just wanted a softshell! Lol. I haven't set a line since maybe June. Too much dang catfish innthe deep freeze. My sister just moved out on her own. Might load her up with some catfish nuggets as a housewarming present. Gotta make room for deer and pigs.

Dag Gum!!!! That's a good urn!

If you are wanting to target the turtles, try some chicken gizzard. It is super cheap and we had pretty good success hooking up turtles on that bait.

Thats a nice one!

About time to get back after them kitty cats! Only two more weekends of duck season and 3 for deer. I've been rounding up last year's trot and limb line stuff and plan on running to town tonight to get the stuff to make some jug lines. Prepare for a lot of catfishing content on the ole youtube channel this year...

I've always been very lukewarm on fishing, which kinda sucks since where I live is teeming with fish and kinda short on big bucks. Actually turned down an offshore trip with a buddy last weekend.

I told myself this year I was going to get into it. Kinda lame to live on the river and not fish, right? So I started thinking about how to make it work for me.

For whatever reason, I can sit all day in a deer stand and not get bored, but I have about a 15 minute attention span on the water. I like to bream fish because the action is usually pretty hot. Set lines seemed like a good way to get some exercise, and ensure good action when I was out. Lot of work involved, and it's really been reminding me of the beginning of my saddle hunting career. Building and running a good trotline quickly and safely by yourself requires lots of planning, for me anyway.

I love the excitement of not knowing what's on the line. I run 50 to 100 hooks, so there's going to be SOMETHING, but what? I pulled up a softshell turtle about as big as my truck tire a few weeks ago. Gators, turtles, choupique, gar, big cats, or maybe just 40 or so little ones...who knows?

But, I didn't count on trotlines leading to me buying r&r tackle. That wasn't part of the plan. But before you go through the work of setting and running a 300ft long string of hooks, you wanna see what's there, ya know? So it comes the rod to poke around a few hours. Maybe set one line, scout a new spot for a few hours, and go back to check the first one. And if you want cut bluegill fr bait, better bring the cricket cage and ultralight! I've spent more time with a pole in my hand for the past few weeks than I have for probably the prior 10 years.

I guess what I'm saying is for me the fun is about tied (probably slight advantage for set lines in my case), but it's lead me to a lot of "pole time" too.

Of course, I am a dirty crossbow hunter too. Bear that in mind. ;)
I used to fly fish for bluegill and rock bass then take the small ones to bait trotlines and bank poles, doubles the fun!

Haven't been back out jugging. Weather ain't nice. But I dug out the trotline stuff and tonigjt I'm making up 10 big-boy limb lines with 8/0 circles, heavy saltwater swivels, and some 4oz sinkers to sink a big bait in the river current.
