Trying anything new this year? Equipment or strategies?

Getting ready for Ohio’s opener on September 28. Trying a couple new things and wondered what changes people are putting in their systems this year.

I sold one of my crossbows and got a Mission sub 1 xr xbow. Have a HHA optimizer on with a vortex single dot reticle scope on it. Allows you to change the magnification without affecting arrow impact at different distance. Which you can’t do with most scopes where you adjust the magnification to the speed of your xbow. You just dial in the yardage, change the magnification to where you want.

Trying a turkey vest as my pack. Will keep the sitting pad that comes with it as my knee pad.

Ordered a Tethrd HYS strap to try as my pack and gear hanger. Also ordered the Predator pack to put my platform in.

Friend of mine baited with peanut butter and maple syrup last year. Screwed the lid to a tree, cut the bottom off the jar of peanut butter and screwed the jar onto the lid/tree. Poured an individual serving size maple syrup on top. He said he killed 20 deer using this baiting method In a few weeks on a depredation permit so I’m going to try it this year.

Got a size 2 flex saddle for this year. I hunted out of a size 1 Kestrel the past 2 years.

I’d like more packable cold weather clothes. I have mostly Sitka stuff. It’s great for the sit it’s bulky and doesn’t compress at all. Too warm to wear in, bulky to carry in/out, and a burr magnet to walk around in. Maybe a good shell and down/merino under-layers.

I’m going to play with single sticking but the rest of my system will be the same as last year: 2 muddy sticks and a 5 step aider, predator platform or ROS, small grapple hook, rappel rope and SRT gear.

This year I'm going to try climbing spurs and hunt some new areas attempting to be a little more aggressive in my tree location. My plan is to go in a little earlier, take my time a little more getting in my tree making sure I'm as quiet as I can be. We will see what happens!

My saddle is new (Kestrel).
Strategically, I pulled my first semi-successful bump-and-dump on some feeding does while still-hunting last week. No harvest, but I sent them packing from the bean field on private with a wind bump, to the main runway on public where I ALMOST headed them off for a shot with the wind back in my favor. The 2 does beat me by about 3 seconds to the safety of thick new-growth, but a fawn stuck around at 8-10 yards out of curiosity, coming up the runway towards me before lazily deciding I wasn’t worth trying to nibble on and scooting back to mom.
It was dope feeling like they did that because I made them, especially when I thought I could get a shot at 20 yards on one of the does.

New equipment and strategies...

Equipment:
1. Saddle flex
2. predator platform
3. DRT
4. Bolts
5. Cut down sticks/one stick method

strategies...everything. SAddle hunting and everything that goes with it.

I went back to my recurve this year for the first time in 20 seasons. I also traded a member on here for a longbow. If I get REALLY lucky I would love to take a deer with both a recurve and a longbow this year.

I'm also getting ready for Ohio's opener (Lake County) and I'm going to be saddle hunting for the first time this year, so way to much to list. But the basics are the Mantis, Predator, and WE stepps.

1 stick ascend/ rappel descend will be new. Squirrel steps will be new.
Selling my crossbow. Getting a vertical bow. Probably won't make the opener, but I'm hoping to hunt with it before season ends.
Each year I vow not to hunt the same spot twice. Will see how it goes. I have more than enough area to do it, but I don't for some reason.

Everything is new. I got 5 short sits in before season ended last year. New Mantis, cranford rope steps, cranford scaffold, predator platform. I'm sure to have lots of mistakes. Cant wait.

As far as gear goes : going with ROS this year from diy platforms last year and then there's the usual fiddling around with different rigging for tether and LB.
New strategy this year is to hunt over every trailcam or treestand I find in the woods. My thinking is if someone scouted and deemed an area good enough to set up their stuff and it meets my criteria I'm hunting it! It's like the Cliff's Notes of run and gun hunting. HAHA!
Goal for this season: Shoot a deer and have someone's trailcam send him the live feed.

This whole saddle thing is new to me. I tried an Anderson tree sling in the 80's but there were no climbing methods to go with it. I went with a Baker Death Climber instead ..... glad I survived. Thinking my Kestral will allow me some quality sits in trees I can't see hunting any other way. Other than that it's business as usual ....... hunting the thick stuff.

New bow, new arrows, new broadheads, new backpacks (yes, plural), new spurs (first time using them). Going to be a great season!

We found a camera last year then promptly killed a hog and dragged it out right in front of the camera..... I'll never know but i hope it was on video mode
