Turkey calls and whitetails deer

Few years back my son and I were Turkey huntind, saw bunch of deer slowly walking through open field, we just starting calling to see. They would look over and then just kept grazing slowly. After like 10 minutes we starting calling super loud, shock gobbling, you name it. They seemed oblivious until we got up and starting walking towards the field. Never occured to me then to start carrying a Turkey call with me, especially during archery. Need to order up some good mouth calls and start practicing! Anyone use the "Phelps" mouth calls? Glad I ran across this.

I did some research on YouTube and the internet, that deer feel safer when turkeys are near. Some hunters use fall Turkey calls while walking towards their hunting spot. I was watching on YouTube video zack from the hunting public used a Turkey call he was stalking deer from the ground and it worked(the deer didn't come the Turkey call but the deer felt safe which enabled him to get a shot off).

This January I plan on doing spot and stalk whitetails slash scouting. For me it's always been hard just see deer after gun season so want to be more aggressive this year( I hunt 100% public land near a big city).

Here's my question I was thinking about getting a Turkey decoy mounted to my bow
When I am doing spot and stalk, Turkey season is over so it will be more safe.

It's very unconventional but It might give me a extra time shoot a deer, I would be wearing my ghillie suit. The Turkey decoys that mount to your bow would be very mobile way compared to a deer decoy. Let me know what you think.
Fourth years ago I bought a friction squrel call. Weighs nothing still works great. If deer gets spooky just twist a bit. Doesn't always work. But I've had success.

i'm sorry for being a total n00b in asking but would this work with the box calls for turkey too?

we don't have a fall turkey season here so I don't see it being an issue while bow or gun hunting deer.

Can't see any reason why not. Mouth calls are probably more convenient to use while still-hunting or stalking, though.

My hunting buddy says he's had lots of deer come investigate him while slow walking and using a mouth call during turkey season. He says he gonna implement that into his deer season this year.

I have no first hand experience. A mouth call doesn't take up much room so easy enough to take a long I guess

I’ve witnessed bucks exhausted from the rut hanging out in turkey flocks for protection. Once a deer is inside a large flock they can completely let their guard down, trusting that all those birds will detect danger.

I’ve also had deer walk right up to me in the spring while calling turkeys.

so yes, I definitely carry a mouth call with me when deer hunting. I don’t always use it, but it can be an amazing tool if used judiciously.

Now I've got to get some mouth calls and learn how to use them. Thanks, guys.

I've had deer come in to calls when turkey hunting quite a bit. I started using calls to bring deer in during deer season. Since deer and turkey eat a lot of the same things, the deer just think the turkeys are at the buffet. Deer feel calm around turkeys since they know they are always on the lookout and I am sure deer do not realize that turkeys don't have the same great sense of smell they do.

I have even made fly down flapping noises after bumping deer going in during dark or grey light. Add some clucks and purrs to that and they will think it was turkeys that rousted them out from under that feed tree.

I wonder if the only caveat here is: it’s gotta be somewhere turkeys actually would be??

I’ve never seen a turkey in the marsh before, for example.

Maybe? The turkey population around here isn't particularly dense. I don't know if turkey calls would spook a deer, or make them curious about the poor lost SOB bumping around the marsh. Could go either way.

i would guess regardless that a turkey sound would fit in more than my size 13 Timbs falling through the floatilla every 4 steps followed by curse words.

These are such good ideas. Glad I came across it!
I always feel like I'm slipping in like a ninja with cat paws walking on mushrooms, but then you bump a deer and it goes sprinting past you and you literally cannot hear a sound lol. Cover sounds might just be more effective then trying to be silent.. interesting thought. I've never tried yet but you bet that next year I will

not a cover sound but some old timers I know insist that using a white bandana to wave at deer you bounce can bring them back. Looks like a whitetail butt lol.

I've used the turkey call several times this season, either a slate or just making a call with just my mouth to "defuse" a deer's flight reaction to being bumped. It seemed to work. As long as it is a soft bump, meaning they didn't smell me, just heard me coming through the woods and bounded off. If they smell you the gig is up.
