My leupold crapped out on my last Thursday (Friday was shotgun opening weekend). I went to Cabelas and found the Vortex Vanquish scope 4-12x40 for 149.00. I bought it and placed it on my Mossberg 695 and will sight it in this week. Once I get my other scope back it will possibly go on my son's remington 870 20 gauge, put the vanquish on my Winchester 308 and move the scope from the .308 (3-9x33) to my mossberg.

I looked through this scope and a leupold 3-9x33 (CDS model) and the clarity on the vortex was just a tad better than what the leupold. I've never had a vortex on my shotgun so I don't know how this will pan out. I'm shooting lightfield hybred slugs and will sight my crosshairs for 3" high at 50 and should be just a tad high at 100. I'm planning on pushing these slugs out to 175 yards and with this scope I think I can reach out and touch something.

My two questions are:
1. Will this scope put up with the punishment of a 546 grain slug going 1450fps at the barrel?

2. Will the energy be sufficient at 200 yards?

I have killed deer with 12 Ga Accutips out to 180+, but they are 385 gr. Does the scope even have the elevation to reach the 200??

Virtex had a great warranty and works with military hence why I use their scopes on everything except my 1300 & my 220 which are my slug guns. Use the Nikon Slughunters on both of those with good results.

I’m going to head out to some property and see where she shoots. If I can sight it in for 150 then I’ll be happy.
