Has anyone tried to sharpen some vpa single bevels by hand ? I can not get these things sharpe for nothing ! Cutthroat and IW no problem. These I can not get to break a bur over.

I’ve done great by hand but looks like I might be buying a guide for these ones.

Anything over 30° is where KME & Lansky fall flat on their faces with their sharpeners, as their systems only go to 30°.

A bit of a shame, their sharpeners work so well otherwise.

I managed to get them pretty decent today. I really had to work the fronts. Each one I could see a radius going down half the blade edge. It didn’t get ground much from factory. I got out my glass and started with 400 grit to rough it in. The steeper angle is for sure a bit of a challenge. But dang so the tips get really sharpe on these things.

I bought the StaySharp guide for VPA and when you use the diamond plate they offer as well they get pretty dang scary, at least my 200grs did. The diamonds are worth the investment IMO.

Yeah I have a DMT bench stone I used as a medium grit to final shape it and get a decent edge. Then stepped through grits up to 1500. Then a few passes on a fine ceramic. Then to the strop. It was a process but I got them shaving sharpe finally. Hitting it on 400 really helped to cut a edge fast.

The 400 stone is a must. I have the 200gr and edge chatter has been a big issue for me as well, they get chipped so bad a couple of mine are basically serrated at this point. Should have stuck with the cutthroats for the warranty!

Actually no yet I have a mill, lathe , etc. I have a tiny little 3” Grinder from the 70s from my grandfather. The rough grit Diamond seemed to nock them out fast.

Well if you’re interested in one get one then look up a paper wheel. I bought a cheap one mainly to sharpen broadheads. Paper wheels are awesome to get them razor sharp.

Yes. I run them on a medium diamond stone by hand. You should end up with a large burr on the bottom of the blade if you are sharpening at correct angle. Once that's done I step up to a fine stone. After that I remove burr by lightly running that edge over the fine stone. Then I step up to leather strop and get them shaving sharp.

I bought VPA single bevel 200gr heads earlier this year and actually thought they were defective out of hte box. Huge burr on them and looked 'chattery'. Emailed VPA and they said they intentionally leave the burr on because most customers want to sharpen themselves, though they did recommend a sharpening process. I followed their process and got them stupid sharp.

Get the diamond plates and the stay sharp guide. You need to accept that it is going to take some time to get a burr at each grit, my cutthroats took about 30min a head from 400 to buffing. Once the edge is flat and developed they are much easier to touch up.

Yeah I gave and have been using the stay sharpe. I had various diamonds already. But ended up getting a nice DMT bench Diamond. All my others I can hand sharpen. The vpa not so much but mine needed a belt sander practically. The first .5” from the tip of each blade was a big radius. I had to put a lot of elbow grease in on this set.
