Well that was close (bowstring broke)

I had a string let go on a compound upon release of an arrow 40 years ago. The string slapped my hand so hard it was one of those "I don't want to look but I guess I have to" moments. No real damage but it sure hurt like the all get out. It took me several years to get over the little involuntary flinch that would occur every time I released an arrow after that.

Last year had a string break on my compound at full draw. The string whipped at my face and broke a poly-carbonate Rx lens but the glasses probably saved significant eye damage, if not the eye itself! Still had a nasty black eye! And I usually didn't shoot with the glasses, just happened to that night for whatever reason! Someone was looking out for me!

Years ago I had a Quillian Bamboo Longhunter Longbow. The riser cracked right at the grip but didn’t break. I had just met Dean Torges and asked him if he could fix it. I took it to him, he fixed it and told me to take it out back and shoot it. He said if it doesn’t break it never will. It did not break but I was afraid of it so I sold it. A few years back someone was talking about a Quillian longbow in their family that was cracked in the handle. We traded numbers and spoke about that bow that I was afraid of. His family had killed every big game animal in North America except a Grizzly up until that time. It is now a family heirloom and they would never sell it.

Anyway, your story reminded of this so I thought I would chime in. I hope your bow is ok .

Cool story thanks for sharing!

Yikes! Never had a string break but I've had a couple self bows explode drawing them back when "breaking" them in. Was that a 3 Rivers string (not that it would matter)? It just seems like the color they usually use. Any ideas why it broke?

Glad you are ok. Busted a limb once myself but it didn’t separate . Witnessed a lower limb turn loose on a guy years ago. String wrapped around his back over his shoulder and the cam hit him in the temple. It was lights out for a few minutes.

Wow, got lucky! Never had a string break, bit had a cedar arrow snap on half on release...THANK GOD in was wearing a bracer, or it would habe gone through my forearm. Still hurt like a bitch as the rear end then toppled off mywrist....taught me to inspect my arrows a lot better though...and always wear the right gear!

If you need a string I could twist you up one and get it you free
That’s super kind of you. I bought one from HCBstrings this week. I’m not sure what kind of turn around he has but hopefully I’ll get it soon.

I've never had that happen to me personally but when I used to shoot winter 3d league there was a guy whose compound came apart where everyone is standing side to side "double checking their sights" before going out on the 3d range. It sounded like a .22 going off. Luckily nobody was injured. That was a new bow too!!!!

If you ever need any extra look me up I got a lot of extra strings I made that I never used maybe more than once to shoot in or what not I gave a friend of mine about 200 strings of various lengths and materials last year for his family to shoot in their bows. Just made 4 the other day for 2 of my bows because I was bored

I had a recurve limb-tip let go and peel back down on the shot, I had a compound limb de-laminate and relax down, and I had the center of a compound bow cam shatter out and leave me holding a handle (I had the e-clip hit me about an inch below the eye and draw blood)... Luckily I was never hurt. As a bow tech, I see some nasty stuff almost every day, with a surprisingly minimal amount of human damage!

How about 2 breaking in 1 year? I must be real lucky. I’m just linking the two threads for anyone interested in me breaking stuff consistently.
