Not sure if it's a strategy or a tactic but something I don't read others doing....
I climb with a multi step aider and that is kinda required equipment for this 1
This also might be regional specific...not sure...but southern hunters will understand
I'll get on a deer run thru the palmettos and follow and follow then the trail just ends...u hit a wall of palmettos and u can't see where the trail goes. I take out my tether and throw it around the nearest tree as high as I can. Attach my aider to the friction hitch on the tether and use my linesman for balance on a wonky tree and climb up my aider or just hold on to the trunk with both hands if it feels safe....that gets my head 8-10 foot up in the air and a lot of times u can see where that trail picks back up. My last hunt I walked up to high spot surrounded by low swamp...used the swamp to access and as soon as I stepped out of the water I was met with over head high palmettos...I did as described and I could see over the palmettos and preplan my way over to the oak I wanted to get to so I didn't have to guess my way over to the spot....I could see the best path from my vantage point and didn't have to bust thru blind
In the pic of the pig bed u can see in the background how it looked to me....can't see anything to try and pick ur way thru....2nd pick is it all in action and I could see over the top and pick a path. I got the idea from watching orcas and white shark footage....when thier prey is outta sight on land they pop up outta the water ...I think they called it "periscope" behavior or something like that...they just pop thier heads out of the water and take a look around and dip back in and plan the rest of the hunt and I thought to myself...hey, that's great idea...doesn't take much time or effort and u gain good info for the little effort u use
Edit:....spy hopping behavior is what they call the orca behavior
