What do you guys think of this... right off the side of the road. High and fresh . Check out the shavings on the mulch. Took this pic 10 minutes ago on my ride home from work. I’m in south East PA

Definitely the time of 3rd rut around here. It won't be hot and heavy like the main rut but any does not bred yet will be coming into estrous again around now. I have a tree like that in my front yard, I'll have to see if anyone's hit it again. It got hit all October and then again the first week of December.

10 years ago I shot a buck during the second rut and it was such a cool experience. It was a doe and a little one and the little one must have been just coming into it's first estrous cycle. He was chasing her and at one point even stopped and craned his neck like when an elk bugles but let out a long grunt.

I love late seasons here in Pa . I have seen some of the biggest bucks in late season chasing yearling doe's that were coming into estrous.

And we think spurs and bolts kill trees. Better eliminate that tree killer
A just sentence for such a horrible crime

No. They rub and they spar until they shed.
What do you mean no? I think there is a pretty good chance that some does were not bred the first or 2nd rut,so they would come into heat again around the new year.
I suspect PA is not vastly different from NY as far as buck to doe ratio. There are tons of does here in NY and not that many bucks. I would guess around 1 to 8 to 1 to 12.
I could be wrong,it has happened once or twice before.

I did not mean that it can't be a 3rd rut. What I meant to say that rubbing does not mean a breeding phase is occurring.

Down south here in Texas Chupacabras have been known to shred trees like that to sharpen their teeth.
