What is your go to hunting height?

I don't enjoy heights either 8'-15', that being said using the trunk of the tree to hide myself and utilizing the top shot has been very productive when I don't have backdrop. Along with positioning myself so my back is to the sun, so it will be in their eyes coming towards my set.

First year in the saddle so we will see. In years past with the climber 25' consistently as that is what my bow rope is. This year I know it'll be all over the place as I can now access more trees and actually hide in cover if I choose to do so. Pretty excited about it.

Alot of places i hunt are old timber where the first limb could be 60 feet but I still wont go over 40

Usually around 15 feet. Where I hunt is thick and shots are not going to be far as a result.

As high as I can get without cover interfering with my kill zone. So early season I’m lower, but when the leaves are gone it’s 30 ft. Shot angles are tougher….because the higher I am, the more likely a deer is to walk right under the tree I’m sitting in. 30 ft up you can get away with a lot that you can’t at 20 for sure and that’s valuable. Lower down the Deer see you, and you never see the deer. So unless you can sit like a stone and not move a muscle for 4 or 5 hours straight, you literally don’t know what your missing until you go high.

IMO climbers and saddle are pretty different as far as hunting height goes. A climber at 25-30 feet feels like a saddle at 15-18 feet. I can’t explain it. I don’t know if it is that when you hunt in a climber you are kinda floating off the tree with no other perspective and a saddle you face the tree which gives you more of a real feel as to your height. Maybe it’s just that there are less moving parts to climbing so you just get higher quicker and before you know it you’ve crept to 30 feet and you didn’t even realize it. Whereas that would be five sets of climbing sticks depending on climbing method if your saddle hunting.

I “feel” safe in my climber with the bottom platform about 25 feet which puts my head just over 30 feet but that’s about max for me. I “feel” safe in my saddle with my platform at about 16 feet putting my head at 22 feet or so. Just my experience. I know there are guys that have no fear and would hunt in Redwoods if that’s what it took. That’s just not me.

15-25 most of the time. Depends on the situation. If its over 20, its in the climber. With my saddle its usually 15-18. Cumbersome equipment wise to go higher. We had permanent stands in the late 80's and early 90's over 30 feet up. Never had a single deer bust us in those. Those were ridge top rifle stands that covered alot of area. Its not popular around here but I still have a couple of very nice permanent stands built with pressure treated lumber and large screws that can be loosened as the tree grows out. Those are on private land.

Just set up 2 trees to hunt my front field. Platform will be about 15 feet for both. Don't need to go any higher for good cover.
