I'm in Roanoke, Va. and I seen my first velvet buck this week. I was surprised. I didn't think they started that until late July for some reason.
I think it really depends on where in the country the deer are. This year the bucks in my area shed in mid December and now in mid May have fuzzy stubs. In the temperate climate here the bucks have a couple months vacation.I think they start growing back as soon as the old ones fall off.
I thought I posted this earlier but I don’t see it.
I'm in east central AL and saw nubs 2 weeks ago. Old antlers drop in Feb, Mar here and new ones appear in late April early May.
I’ve got a buddy who claims the earlier they drop the sooner they start and might mean bigger rack in the upcoming season, no idea if there’s anything to the theory.I thought that too…like the new ones push the old ones out, thanks for the link buddy!

Based on observation, they are are going to grow what they are capable of growing for any particular year. The early droppers will just finish earlier than the late droppers.I’ve got a buddy who claims the earlier they drop the sooner they start and might mean bigger rack in the upcoming season, no idea if there’s anything to the theory.
I love the scouting part but its getting too thick for me here in KY and those ticks.

Does your camera say "we've been trying to reach you about your car insurance" when it takes a pic?In Massachusetts, we see them as early as March. Here is one in late April.View attachment 84977
I read that there are from 18 to 29 different subspecies of Whitetail in the US. Do they drop and regrow at different times, IDK.
When the whitetail were repopulated in KY, I heard that deer were brought to KY from different states. I think (and I could be wrong) but this is why the timing of the rut varies by area and why it lasts so long.View attachment 84974
