When do Antlers start?

I'm in Roanoke, Va. and I seen my first velvet buck this week. I was surprised. I didn't think they started that until late July for some reason.

For some reason thought it would be later too but last year I saw a monster and it looked like he was already hard horned but I just don’t think he could have been in was in June or July here in Ky

I'm in Virginia. My bucks are in bachelor groups right now and hitting my mineral sites. They started showing growth toward the second half of April. I pulled a few cards from my cams today and they have 3-5" nubs.

I thought that too…like the new ones push the old ones out, thanks for the link buddy!

I’ve got a buddy who claims the earlier they drop the sooner they start and might mean bigger rack in the upcoming season, no idea if there’s anything to the theory.

Based on observation, they are are going to grow what they are capable of growing for any particular year. The early droppers will just finish earlier than the late droppers.

I read that there are from 18 to 29 different subspecies of Whitetail in the US. Do they drop and regrow at different times, IDK.
When the whitetail were repopulated in KY, I heard that deer were brought to KY from different states. I think (and I could be wrong) but this is why the timing of the rut varies by area and why it lasts so long.Screenshot_20230517_131400_DuckDuckGo.jpg

I love the scouting part but its getting too thick for me here in KY and those ticks.

Yeah, I hate the woods in the summer. Ticks, chiggers, poison ivy/oak, snakes, etc. That’s why I love my cell cams and I put big external battery pack on them to keep them running a long time so I can stay out of there.

I may of mis-spoke about KY. It says all of there deer came from Wisconson.
The article attached said TN. Got their deer from 7 different states. Read what they say about rut timing.

Take a deer with 130" of "bone" and think about how fast that has to grow in 5 months. Impressive. The biggest put on inches a day at some points.

I had this dude show up this week among some others, but he is leading the pack in growth by a few inches. I'm not sure, he definitely has potential but he doesn't look super heavy at this stage. I combed through hundreds of pictures trying to ID this deer thinking it would be easy with his ear, but this appears to be the first photo I have of him.

I didn't mean to leave this camera out, it's just way back in and I never got to it. Guess we'll see how long the batteries last.

Here in southeast Missouri, the rack falls off in mid-February and the new rack is usually visible in mid-April.

Earlier this month in SE Iowa. Five bucks in the second picture with all about the same growth.
