who exercises for climbing

I try and climb a tree every day. Nothing fast, nothing heavy but going through the motions. Not only does it build strength but also builds muscle memory. I also walk the trails a few times a week and I hate walking. When out walking, I look at trees thinking about the best way to climb them.

It's the only thing that keeps me motivated.

I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in January, huge increase in hip flexibility, leg strength, and cardio. Also dropped 8 lbs. And if I need to finish off a deer I can choke it out.
I've done BJJ for a while now, but unfortunately I think all the accrued wear and tear is catching up with me.

I worked out last year and payed special attention to lunges, stretching, and deep squats. By deer season I could space my steps 30” apart. Post COVID joint pain and a knee injury later and I can barely do a body weight squat.

not just for hiking climbing and keeping healthy for work but mostly because the wemen in this part of oregon are animals.most men cant keep up with them and they dont respecct soft men.its the american exotic.gotta love it man they try to break a man in half dancing

I try to do 100+/- good pushups a day. Usually I do sets of 40, 40 then 25 over the course of the day. I bike to work as much as I can and we take walks. I also like to get my cardio up when possible but I'm not a workout guy. I do think keeping somewhat active is important and practicing one sticking is important too. To me gyms are absolutely boring. Beau Martonik from the East Meets West Podcast had a getting in mountain buck hunting shape pod cast he released a month or so ago I have been meaning to watch. He's a PA Public Land Mountain Buck hunter and the terrain he hunts is similar to where I hunt. I think to keep going all season and to get back in there you need to have some kind of fitness regimen.

I’ve actually started at a rock climbing gym. ive always wanted to and it’s the first time I’ve lived near one is the main motivation…. But it’s also great for just climbing, rope management, and just for staying in shape.

My favorite exercise in general is the climbing itself. I've got a couple of trees at my house that are ok, or I head out to a nearby preserve. I load up my pack (minus any hunting weapons, if I'm not on my property) and go out just like it was a real hunt. I set up, climb, shoot my arrows if I'm in my own yard, then climb back down and pack it all up. Then I do it again. On a hot day using Stepps, I can usually only do two trips up and down. On a cooler day with SRT I can do 3 or 4. It's an incredible total body workout, gets my body in shape, and helps get me used to the procedure. It's also helped me refine my techniques and what gear I bring, and how I pack it. So I guess what I'm saying is that the best exercise for climbing... is probably climbing.

OP, you might consider a rowing machine. Gives a good cardio workout and engages 85% of your body for strength and stamina . At 65 three to four 20 min sessions a week keeps me in great climbing shape.

I just climbed to the top of a maple yesterday to retrieve a throw ball I got stuck this spring. The thing that appeals to me about rec climbing is a "thinking man's " game meaning your next move could be your last if not done correctly. You get a mental as well as a physical workout. I believe it works your core as I can feel it the next day.

The last 7 years of my career I taught Line school. At 65 I climb a couple times a week, lift weights and practice Martial Arts for mobility.

so this versa climber seems to be working, at 7 weeks now, going 25-30 minutes a day 5 days a week
two of the days going slower with a lot of resistance. can see myself getting stronger and my back is better
looking up for the tree work this fall
