Whos had more saddle hunting influence?

I believe I first heard of saddle hunting on the hunting beast. I had to look it up and see what it was all about! Right around that time, Aero was working on the kestrel, so I pre ordered one and that’s all she wrote! So whoever that gentleman was, thanks, but could you reimburse me for all this money I’ve spent? Once I found this place I was drawn to the wealth of saddle knowledge and couldn’t stop coming back… not only that, I enjoyed the people more and the lack of politics was a plus too. Back then, I didn’t even know who Eberhart was or Scott Hamilton. So is that Red Squirrel? I’m a little slow this morning. G2, DIY and Boswell were definitely some of the first videos I watched.

Best I can do right now:
Wow, scrolling through the names of the first hundred or so members - so many good conversations where new ideas were hashed out! Makes me nostalgic for the good ole days...

Thanks for providing the place to talk saddles and discuss truly innovative ideas, @redsquirrel!

Those were a bunch of the users from the early days. Here are the first 10:
me
Casey from New Tribe
Boswell
joaxe
100rollie
nyjerry
bigburner
the turkey guy
chris conroy
Saddle Assassin

When I started this I had put a message on the archery talk thread and messaged some of the guys on there about it. John Eberhart made the first 20. I see a couple names in the top 20 that pop up from time to time but man this place has changed since. I'm happy to see @ImThere is still poking his head in now and again. justsomedude definitely should be on your list too!
Just some dude - didn’t he pretty much design what is now the drey? I believe I saw a post where it was either him or no one special that basically laid out the dimensions and design for the hammock and even went over how he built it. It was way ahead of its time

The drey, I believe they call that convergent evolution. Stuff like that was everywhere on here 5-6 years ago. Literally the first "saddle" I ever tried was just an old towel with a webbing bridge over an RC harness. Just something to try before I dropped coin on a Kestrel. Pretty much an unrefined drey.

I know guys were tying fleece blankets and towels/ sheets, but if memory serves me correctly this particular thread, he literally laid out step by step, dimension by dimension and improvement by improvement of a hammock specific saddle. I am pretty familiar with what guys were doing before the return of commercial saddles and slings, I was just wondering if it was in fact justsomedude that created that post.

He started this thread which definitely refined the idea at minimum. https://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/the-ultimate-ultralight-saddle.2358/

He also started the first 2TC thread that I remember. https://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/stirrup-climb-good-setup.3816/

And stirrups as a platform: https://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/stirrups.2091/post-25875

He had some unique ideas back in the day that have been reinvented more recently

Justsomedude definetly the diy master. Those old threads are soooo much better quality than all the recent filler material

That sure does look like 2tc to me.....View attachment 77555
Yea when I discovered this website a couple years ago, I went on some binge reading. I had hunted saddles off and on for years and had no idea there was a forum for it. Let alone how many duper creative and helpful people there are on here. I remember reading his stuff specifically because he really is a tinker with it until it works kind of guy and that’s how things are created or made better. It’s just a guy with ideas, and trying things out until it either works or is made better. I respect that.

Ok....I'll throw my thoughts out there...

The saddle hunting revolution would not exist if it were not for @redsquirrel and this site.

It is because of this site Tethrd exists( I know I give them a lot of crap, but they are extremely good at marketing, and really pushed saddles mainstream in a "Mobile" thursty Market). Saddlepalooza never would have happened, people never would have met. Ideas never would have been shared.. It is because a lot of the trial and error of members on this site commercial platforms exist. Its because of this site that single strap on steps are now back in production. Its because of this site.....

If it wasn't for this site and it's now MASSIVE reach, companies like trophyline never would have come back and the umpteen other saddle producers wouldn't exist.

If it wasnt for this site and some key members(@Allegheny Tom ), Treehopper never would have brought back the anderson....

If it wasnt for this site and a few members, Treehopper would never have looked into the windwalker and bought Loc-On

If it wasnt for this site wild edge steps probably would have faded like Jim stepps...

If it wasnt for this site and a few members(@kyler1945 ), the JX3 may have never come to what it is

If it wasnt for this site....

Now if it could just all go back to the way it was when it was just this site

It’s funny to it wasn’t just a website it was a People. It was phone calls till 3 o’clock in the morning. It was ideas being talked about that didn’t even make it to the to the thread that we were talking about. It was a it was different was exciting. It was fun.

We are a team on this site. We feed off each other's ideas and suggestions. Our journeys morph. One chance meeting, or off-the-cuff comment leads to all sorts of avenues and ideas.

How I came to trying out a saddle had nothing to do with this site per se. I spent a lot of time on the old QDMA forum and I had my general location in my avatar. Lo and behold, another member lived right down the road from me...5 minutes away. He reached out to me and we became friends. We started sharing habitat concepts and we actually toured some properties that practiced QDMA. Somewhere along the line, I mentioned to him my issue with falling asleep in the tree and he suggested trying a saddle. I wasn't enthused about the idea but I did find an old school trophyline for a cheap price. I tried it for a year or 2 and was not impressed but my issue of sleeping in the tree was getting worse. I had to do something. That was the year the Kestrel and Mantis were introduced. I decided to buy a Kestrel and I also got very interested in learning the finer points so I began the addiction of Saddlehunter.com. I look back at some of my early posts and think to myself..."what an idiot"! Some guys probably think that of me even now! LOL

About that time my buddy would show me 2 of his gear choices...His Anderson sling and his Woodpecker drill. My closed-mind couldn't imagine that either were as good as my Kestrel and EZClimb steps. But one day I tried the drill and was blown away. I couldn't find one to buy so I ordered an EZ Kut drill. Months went by and it was never shipped. That was when Mark Cama decided to make the Treehopper drill. I bought one but I thought the handle needed improvement. The Woodpecker handle was better. I decided to email Mark to suggest a different design. Within minutes he returned the email asking if he could call to discuss it. I was impressed at how quickly he responded to a customer...one he didn't even know. Mark and I struck up a friendship and spent many hours brainstorming drill designs

Also about that time, Mark started to consider making a saddle, but he didn't want to just copy what was already being made...the market and choices for saddles was quite small back then. Also about that time my buddy was showing me his Anderson, which I often snickered at. How could that thing be as good as my Kestrel? I thought. Then one day after a beer or 5 I decided to try it (at ground level). Holy crap I loved it! But as most great gear seems to go, the Anderson was discontinued and very difficult to find. But @Vtbow had a few of them if I recall correctly. Mark desperately wanted to get his hands on one to reverse engineer it and make some changes and improvements. We got a "loaner" to Mark and Mark ht the road in high gear. I was amazed at how quickly the prototypes showed up at my door. I still have 2 of them and those are what I still use. I actually like those a little better than the production models.

99.9% of the credit for the Recon and the drill goes to Mark Cama. His energy seems limitless and his attention to customers is top shelf. The guy amazes me. I just happened to be a guy he reached out to and asked for me to test some stuff that he'd send to me and get my impressions. It was almost like I had someone making custom gear for me! Mark and I are not keeping contact these days, but I assume that he's still among the best for customer satisfaction. He doesn't frequent this site, but He is huge among producing some of the favorite gear we use. Thanks Mark.

Progress is rarely a straight line. It zigs, it zags, an idea here, an experiment there, slowly the pieces of the puzzle get put together. At one time there were lots of videos being posted of various "Primitive" climbing techniques from around the world, palm tree climbers using 2 TC type setups, natives with straps between their feet, there was a Japanese one (IIRC) where a guy was using short sticks on either end of a rope to create a mini platform of sorts to step up on alternating his way up the tree. Great to see now how far things have come
