Why do you climb?

For me it’s to increase my odds plain and simple. It’s not easy to climb in any way I’ve found but it’s worth the effort.
On the ground I can get deer into bow range but to close the deal at point blank range the odds fall in the deer favor if I’m not elevated above them.
I’m a bowhunter which is a game of inches sometimes I need every advantage I can get to kill the deer I’m after these days. I may only see that deer once that year so above them I go.
If I gun hunted there really isn’t a need to climb I could use the terrain to increase my visibility.
I did buy a Ghillie suit this year to scout/hunt some so I’ll see how that goes.

Ok I finally bit and opened another Nutterbuster brain fart thread.
I climb so I can see in thick areas. To help with scent dispersal for close up shots. To conceal movement with a bow at close up shots. If I’m gun hunting, I’m usually creeping, sitting on a hill side where I can see distance and don’t worry about my scent so much because I shoot them when their nose is in the air scent checking. If visibility is close range, I’m bow hunting and need to get up. I’ve killed with Tradbows from the ground but it’s hard to pull it off.

It would be sooo much easier to carry a butt pad into the woods and sit down W/O carrying a bunch of junk with me but I do like to get off the ground a little to see. So I continue to carry my saddle, sticks, pack, and bow, hanger, and a list of stuff that I hardly use.
IDK about y'all but sitting on the ground with just about any small seat/pad for extended hours KILLs my butt! I am way more comfortable in a saddle or a regular treestand

Because I determine better than 50/50 odds a deer will come within range of my chosen weapon in a specific area, and the best way to control for the variables of the hunt is to be elevated.

More often than not, poor odds keep me on my feet. And as often as not, it’s advantageous, or more, to stay on the ground.

I feel guilty for having contributed to newer hunters assuming they should be as concerned as me with my climbing method or how high I go. It’s safe to say I’m ‘picking nits’ at this point. I suspect if 80% of hunters did some honest math on the difference being in a tree makes in regards to success, a whole lot less would be spending time money effort and risk climbing trees. But, for now, wheeeeeee!!!!!!

Shower thought.

Climbing sucks. We're not good at it. It complicates things tremendously when it comes to the time, effort and money involved in hunting. But we all do it. Why? Why do YOU climb trees to hunt deer? What do YOU personally gain from it?

Why do you shower?

So to recap:

Sight advantage - getting above brush allows you to see further and shoot further.

Stealth advantage - deer don't look up? Or at least getting above their line-of-sight helps you get away with small movements and drawing a bow. You're also more likely to have a non-target animal pass your location without spooking if you're elevated.

Scent control - keeps the area immediately around your stand from getting saturated with scent?

Safety when gun hunting - shooting down is safer than shooting through the woods.

Better archery angles - low exit wounds mean better blood trails. On the flip side, too high and a double lung gets tougher.

Easier to stick to a spot - it's easier to stay in a stand if you have to pack all your junk and set it up again.

Because it's fun - agreed

Because...well, because! - fair enough.

I don't climb, or I only climb if I feel I cant hunt on the ground - interesting...

Did I miss anything?

Plain and simple for me.I just dont know any other way.It is the way i have always hunted and if i aint climbing a tree than i just dont feel like I am hunting.Picking a good tree and trimming me a nest that i can hide in and spike one is what really gets my blood churning.
