On my last hunt I had a buck come in from my 10 o'clock on a bee line to my right. This video shows how fast things can change and why I think a platform is the only way to go. I didn't try to do a teaser film, that's just when my camera cut out. I'm pretty frustrated I never got the shot on video.

Gotta love it! Man that came together super fast!
Haha, yeah, it was intense. I ended up getting a heart shot and watched him drop. First time I've had one drop in view that wasn't spined :)

Daggggggggg! That’s awesome! Nothing better than keeping that adrenaline flowing for a few moments before it dumps! Buck I shot last year only went about 30 steps after I shot him then stood there for an eternity before he went lights out. He was dead on his feet! Prolonged adrenaline for sure lol

I’ve noticed shooting (my setup) lower weight draw with heavier arrows and cut on contact broadheads i see more animals die within my view after the shot than I ever did shooting wicked fast high poundage bows with machined tips or mechanicals

Looks like a great hunt and an exciting moment for sure!

do they seem to run less? React less to the shot or the hit? I'm all about keeping a nice quiet bow, mechanical vs. Fixed (coc or otherwise) I'm less decided.

Def less reaction or zero reaction to the shot and most I don’t even think know they were shot just that something isn’t right ie internal & external hemorrhaging! We could def go down a rabbit hole with the fixed vs mechanicals and I shoot both but prefer fixed cut on contact

Yeah - I hunt some small parcels where a quick drop is extra welcome. I've been using expandables with a quiet setup, which has been working well overall.

That was quick! Ill just add that the only time i ever dry fired a bow was when what happened to you there happened to me too! I caught the arrow falling off out the corner off my eye and when i kindof looked down at it i hit the trigger by accident...sounded like .45 went off! I immediately wanted to puke and that was the end of my Drenalin!

That makes my stomach turn just thinking about it

Mechanicals can be down right deadly & hard to beat with a balanced heavy arrow set up pushing it from an efficient bow

Are you saying that you couldn’t have made the shot on a ros?

I don't think I could have, the deer didn't stop even after basically yelling at him. I pulled my arrow off my rest taking more time, and had to stand up to reposition or watch him walk out of my life. Not even counting self filming in the mix.

I've probably killed more deer on my "off" side than my good side.... Maybe I need to work on my setup, haha.

Could you make that shot without swinging all the way around the tree, or would you have gone that direction so it wouldn't have been that bad to go the rest of the way?

Depends on the setup and how I'd planned my shooting windows. In hindsight you did have time to put your arrow back on your rest. Maybe that shot is made off ROS, maybe it plays out differently and a different shot is. Maybe an opportunity is missed.

It's a good reminder to get out and repractice ALL the shots for sure.

I've found that as soon as I see deer, I reach for my bow AND start repositioning my feet on my ROS simultaneously, usually walking my way to keep the tree between us. Not sure if the choice of support really matters much as does your trained muscle memory and the time to react at the earliest moment of the encounter.

ROS and walk the tree. That offside shot would’ve been strong unless you didn’t setup for a strong side or 12:00 shot. To me going over the bridge is a lot more movement than walking the tree. Maybe the same but just seems like more.

I don't know if I could have shot that deer, because I wasn't there. But half of the deer I shot last year were weak side shots, and I honestly think I could have made it fine.

Curious why you didn't have an an arrow on the string and your release on the d-loop? Seems like that could've shaved some seconds? The arrow drop was unfortunate. And I don't self film.

But your maneuver was about the same as what I would've done on a ROS, I think. Bow over bridge, twist at hips, straighten right leg, shoot.

At my age I'm not flexible enough anymore to reach over my bridge and draw my bow. I've tried but I just can't get there. My solution is a sort of a combination approach. I like the comfort of the platform combined with the mobility of a ROS. To get this I just leave my climbing method almost on the backside of the tree from where I set up my platform, about 120º to my strong side. I can then step off the platform with my left foot and onto the top of my stick essentially walking around the tree. This gives me really good access to the weakside shot (my 12:00 to 4:00) while keeping me behind the tree. Any other shot I can manage by simply twisting on the platform.

100% agree with you. I hunted a tree last night there ain't no way a ROS would have allowed me shooting to both sides. Predator platform handled it very well. When i used them with a ratchet or OCB about half the time they would shift , move, kick when I needed them.

I was setting up still, he came in right after I got my cameras set up. Stuff happens, like arrows getting bumped, I just imagine it being easier to shift or turn around on a platform.
