Wild edge stepp lovers

I haven’t had any issue out of my primals at 190. Just made a kydex holster. I like it better than the 3D printed gripr. I made it big enough to carry 7 primals if I want. 6 is about perfect for me whether I use it as a ROS or use my perch.

Local guy selling 7 primal steps with the wild edge rope mod and 3d printed holder for $60. Are the primal gonna hold me at 200? Tempted to grab these, and play around with CAin, knaider only, or @Hall17 method, i already have a 5 step black diamond etrier and am reasonably proficient with it. Do you do the 2 zipties and carabiner, or use a hook of some sort? interested in where guys land with safety: knaider only, Cain, modified, Cain, 5 step etrier. (Sounds there is alignment that knaider/swaider or etrier is sketchiest.
I used Amsteel loops, zip ties and just tape on the crossbar. All worked but I like my hook on the bar because it was easier to get unhooked and move the aider up

I am working my way back to a something similar to 5 WE Stepps with knaider. What are folks doing for the last step where there is no handhold?

Maybe attach your tether as high as you can reach and use the carabiner as a hand hold?

Lineman belt? I just did a Knaider only climb and never touched anything but rope. 6 steps and I was 18 feet plus a step up to ROS. Simple, packable, and effective system.

do you attach the next step overhead? That handhold is so nice!

From base of tree: waist height, then head height. Climb up to waist step using LB. Then attach #3 at head height. Repeat.

Is there a dfferent Knaider approach?

I'm 280 and the primal steps have worked fine for me. I've had a little bit of pull away when using a homemade platform that fits into the step. But actually climbing the tree has been fine.
Also, I've used the knaider in the past with success, but do not like the use of the swaider.

Oh man, this is really making me want to give them another try. My biggest problems were that I couldn't get them to stop sliding and moving. Then I'd be fiddling with the next step trying to get it cammed right that I'd get foot fatigue pretty bad compared to a double step.
I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong.

that’s how I do it but someone could just put the waist one and not have the head step for a handle… I suppose

Gotcha. I guess my difference is I don't use the upper step as a handle, because my hands are on my LB. Side benefit is no issue climbing up to last step.

SAME!!

I’m a very visual person, can someone post a video or video link for your WE Stepps system and Knaider climb? I currently one stick and love it but there are times where I think this system may be a good method to add to my arsenal. I like the idea of 6 steps and getting to 18-20 ft. Also, how are you guys carrying them in?

Wild Edge Stepps. has lots of vids showing how to use them.

I'm not a video guy. Here's more words: Just put the first step so your knee is bent no more than 90 degrees. Put second step the same difference from first, or wait until on first but I like having 1/3 of all steps tied from the ground level. For most people this is about waist and head height. YMMV.

Extend you LB long enough to have room to raise your knee/knaider in front of you. Grab LB with both hands good and lean back into it. It helps if the LB is set pretty high in the tree prior to stepping up. Step up, flip your LB and then shorten it to get more vertical to tie the next step. Loosen LB then repeat.
If you do 2 from the ground then you are only tying 4 while up in tree, and always at about head height.

To carry I just loop the strap of the bag around my head and 1 shoulder. Nothing fancy.

I’ve been using wild edge steps on 90% of my hunts since 2019. I carry 5 in a bag then use a gen 1 perch I keep mounted on another step. I’m using the knaider/ swaider still. Once you get the climbing system down it’s hard to go to something else. I have access to a couple other stick brands that are fairly high end but still always come back to the wild edge steps. I really like the footprint of the perch, I think the shape is great to get partway around the tree using the backside of the platform.

Great thread. WE stepps get a bad rap. I’m on my 3rd or 4th set. I sell in the off season to fund something else. Eventually come across someone offloading cheap stepps, and I’m back on them by season.

My favorite recent post on the book of faces was someone that wanted them “gone immediately” due to some reason. Everyone was suggesting more practice. I asked if he had stretched the ropes as recommended. His reply was “I dont have time for that”.

This thread inspired me to update my carry bag.

I just made a kydex holster last weekend and love it. However, your clip looks way better than my choice. Thanks for sharing!
