Gotcha. What I mean is, I want to match the data to many trail camera observations of a given buck for instance. Having to go in and manually look up and record the wind for every single day or picture I want to review is very laborious. I used to be able to download all of this as a spreadsheet on my computer and then use software to automatically match the conditions to the date and time with a photo. With one click I could fill in all historical weather data on hundreds of photos at once. Now I must go in and look up each day through the interface you shared here and then record what I found somewhere. Before, when every single record could just be saved to my computer it was much easier to filter through and observe daily averages, wind directions around daw and dusk etc.
I have no idea what you mean with the terms Csv format, API, "code in R", that you wrote about. I'd bet there are some other guys reading this that were confused as well. I (mistakenly?) thought that you were saying that historical data was no longer available on Weather Underground. I knew that the data was still available, but I need to reiterate that surface wind readings taken from personal weather stations (PWS) are not reliable for analyzing wind patterns over a broader area.
Prevailing wind is what we need to know, but prevailing wind does not necessarily match the surface wind. We need to apply our knowledge of the terrain and how the actual surface wind behaves due to the hills and other structure. We can make educated predictions of surface winds based on knowing what the prevailing wind was doing (or will be predicted) on a given day. If we can look up historical prevailing data trends, we can predict general behaviors for the areas we are contemplating for stand sites.
For individual trail cam wind monitoring, we can hang wind indicators that will show wind direction when a pic is taken. Thin strips of plastic grocery bags make great wind indicators. (I have them hanging outside my house 365 day a year). I watch wind patterns on a daily basis, not just on hunting days. Wind indicators can be placed so they show in the photo. I realize it's not exactly a high-tech method to record and store data, but we can use wind indicators to help us notice trends when our trail cams snap pics of deer.
