I just drove from Minneapolis airport to Wasau, getting to my hotel about 20 minutes after dark.

Anyone who can’t kill deers in this state has lost my respect. I’ve seen no less than 200 deer on my drive. Took a couple back roads just for good measure.

I’m convinced if these critters lived in south Louisiana, if the heat didn’t kill ‘em, we would in a single season…

Also, if anyone needs a huntjng buddy, shoot me a message! I’m not great company but I kill critters good!

I bet it was all on private farm land.
Problem is all these places up here are trying to grow a big one. So the local private farms are busting with em. Can't get guys to come do crop damage. Everyone wants a trophy.

Lots of deer. Lots of hunters (somewhere in the top 3-5 in total annual licenses sales). 13% of harvest is on public land, 87% on private land.

That's odd, Wisconsin isn't on my spreadsheet...

Wait, there it is! Sorry, had it sorted in ascending numbers of P&Y records. Was all the way at the bottom. My bad.
Look right above Alabama. The deer pic you posted a couple years ago that was the size of Northern rabbits that would fit in a game pouch seemed to be photographic proof of the size of those animals.

I think @MattMan81 has it right, they're all protective of thier deer for trophy hunting or you aren't allowed to kill them period.

From Northern Wisconsin here. I would agree in farm country deer are plentiful, set up on a field edge and wait for them to come out to feed, fish in a barrel. Like others have mentioned good luck trying to get permission. Up north public land is a very different story. You got to put time / work in up here to be successful. Not only do you have big woods to cover, you have the bears, wolfs, coyotes, bobcats and all the idiots illegally baiting to deal with.

You forgot snakes, gators and hogs, oh wait... ;)

How often do you see wolves up there?

They are all over up here. usually you see them while driving, pretty rare to actually see one while walking through the woods. I'm not putting all the blame on the wolves. Coyotes, bears and bobcats do their fair share of snagging up fawns. Our long winters up here can also take out a fair share of deer with the amount of snow we get. Its amazing the difference in weather once you get above HWY 64.

Never thought I’d see the day. @kyler1945 in the same category as my non hunter friends who say every year, “don’t deer get hit by cars all the time? What’s so hard?”
You could respond, "Using a a car is poaching. Cars are not a legal weapon for deer hunting but that doesnt stop them from using them all year long to kill deer. What we need is more game wardens writing tickets for all these outlaws especially the ones using cars out of season."

Where I hunt they go through occasionally. The main pack is about 40 miles away (last i heard). It is amazing though that once a single wolf comes through I won't see a deer for a few days. I'm not sure if they just bed down and reduce their core area. I really don't know what happens. My observations are based off of when snow is on the ground and tracks.

Wonder if that reaction is based on sight, smell or hearing? Having the snow on the ground would certainly give an indication of activity level.

It doesn't happen often enough for me to make a determination on cause. Deer are active and picked up on camera and you see their tracks. Wolf goes through and they don't move. If I had to guess it would be smell, but not 100% certain.
