And buddy and I are headed to Wisconsin the one of October to hunt for a week. We were originally going to hunt mostly private but the trip has now turned into mostly public. We still plan on hunting in the Crawford/Richland county area. Just wondering if anyone could gives us any tips on good public areas. Don’t need spots or anything just good public areas to check out.
Thanks!

What zones/county are your doe tags for? Depending on where your going, highly recommend Devils Lake State Park. Also anywhere along the Lower Wisc State River looks promising. Probably already aware but I would double check any hunting area with the DNR website. They have state maps and sometimes show hunt-able areas that Google maps doesn't reflect.

Plenty of land along the Wisconsin river to hunt. If you’re shooting does, be careful of which county you’re in. If you download the “Go Wild Wisconsin” app, that’ll give you all of the public parcels via GPS map for no cost. It also gives you your shooting time based on your location via GPS.

Good luck!

Awesome thanks. How’s the pressure out there for bow season? Neither of us have been out there. We don’t plan on shooting any does. Not really worth it for us to deal with bringing them back to Maine with cwd restrictions. If one of us kills early then maybe shoot a doe for a local food pantry or something, but that would be about it. Thanks for the tip on the app!

No problem at all. Glad to help. It’ll all depend on which area you decide to go to, but general rule of thumb that I use is the closer to the end of October, the more pressure you’ll have. Gun season opens 11/23, but you’ll want to be aware of the disability hunters gun season from 10/5-10/13. It’s only open to hunters with certain disabilities and only offered on private lands, but just something to be aware of.

I didn’t even know that. Might have to download an app now.

Ok thank you! We will be the last two weekish of October so should be good with the gun hunters.

Dunn County a little further north has the Dunnville Bottoms Wildlife Area along the Chippewa River.
You are really only a short distance from the famous Buffalo County area and right along a river bottom.
I hunted there a few years back and I think it has a lot of potential for some nice deer.
Dunn County usually has leftover doe tags... Good Luck.

I’ll check it out thank you

My buddy and I love hunting new areas all part of the experience. If you ask me it’s too far to go for a meat hunt lol. We get plenty of meat between Maine and Ohio

Good luck! I hope you get one

Just a note, you will not be able to hunt Devils Lake State Park until Nov/15, Try Governor Dodge State Park opens 10/15. Big bucks there, very few bowhunters, small game hunters leave around noon. Happy hunting.

Be careful at Governors. A good chunk is closed 10/15 to 11/15. Most of the park is open 11/15.
