Writing letters for permission

So I decided to pick around 10 or 15 letters to write this summer to ask for permission to hunt. I love hunting public and that is my main priority, but when I get off work it takes me 45 mins just to get to the closest public. So I'm looking for properties close to my work and house. Anyone have any experience or advice on what or how I should go about it? I've written one so far and it's in the mailbox. I've also seen other threads about getting permission but I'm currently using Tapatalk and am still learning this app.

Seems like talking to people might get you better result? Then again we are still in the p@n$3m1c thing and people may not like you coming to there door. Depends on the person I guess. But all the guys who kill nice bucks that way seem to knock on doors. (So they say)

You can believe me. I'm on the Internet.

Yea I thought that also. I struggle with social anxiety so I felt the letters might be better for me. I gave my phone number and email.

This is just my experience, YMMV.

In Alabama, your odds of "cold calling" and getting permission are so close to 0 as to not be worth the paper. Everybody either hunts themselves, has kin or friend that is more important than you, or they have enough problem with poaching that the idea of one more person on their property makes them see red.

People don't let strangers hunt their property here, and I suspect that's true in most places. People also don't generally go on dates with or hire total strangers.

There lies the secret. Don't ask strangers. Ask family, friends, coworkers, and church members. If you don't have friends that hunt, make some. It's the only way that particular approach is going to work. It's also a lot more work than churning out letters or knocking on doors.

For me, it's kinda like a private lease or a club. Sounds like heaven until you have to plant the plots, maintain the roads, and (in a club) navigate the politics of it. Then a 45 minute drive to the nearest public where you can show up and just hunt sounds better and better.

Yea I get all that. I also know its a long shot with just writing letters. I also don't socialize, except on here, which is another issue that I'm currently dealing with that doesn't help my odds. I look at it as its not gonna hurt to write a letter and ask. I do say I dont want to damage any trees or make any plots. Just only want to hunt a few times out of the year because my interest is public. I let you know if its a total fail, and I will learn and try something else. The letter I sent today was a lady who's tax address is in Maryland.

An out of state owner could be the one chance you have. Lots of out of state owners would love to have someone look after their property.

The 45 mins to public ain’t the issue, it’s the 45 mins you gotta take to poo before hunting that’s the issue, I know first hand. After 27 years of rot gut I’m finally gonna go to the doctor and hopefully get this squared away. I can’t tell you how many mornings that I got up early early to get to my hunting spot just to be held up on the toilet. Colonoscopy here I come I recon.

I too struggle with social anxiety even tho I work in a very social field. So I feel ya there.

However, I have around 700 acres of free permission land that I hunt. At one time I had almost 1,500 acres of free permission. This is is western KY where everybody and their uncle hunts so none of it is exclusive access.
I’ve tried letters and calls and knocking on doors.
Typically door knocking is best, followed by calls, and lastly letters.

Asking friends and family is great but some of my best farms are by knocking on strangers doors. You’ll get denied 1 out of 10 times probably but it just takes one farm to kill a deer.

Also, I try to focus on smaller parcels. 10-40 acres. I have access to large pieces(250 acres) but the small pieces have less pressure and can hold big deer. For example, I have a 10 acre piece in city limits that I’ve killed a 140” and 130” deer on.

Good luck, worst they can say is no

It only happens to me when i get excited/nervous going deer hunting and sometimes fishing.

Don't put it off they can fix a lot of stuff, if they catch it early.
