WWYD - Permanent stand found on public state land

How do the deer know it's there and to avoid it if it hasn't been used in years?
Maybe I’m misunderstanding your question but I was saying that if it’s old it’s fine to hunt. But if you can tell it’s a currently used stand deer probably are wise to it

Are you basing that comment off the satellite photo or the actual picture of the stand? the sat photo yes has a lot of green...but those are huge bushes...nothing someone could climb up into.

In the stand photo there is one tree adjacent to the tree in question (in the background) but there is no way someone could hunt out of it practically, IMO without really trimming up some areas (which isn't allowed).

Again, I am asking about this scenario more to see what others opinions are if it happens again in the future...

The stand looks like it was recently set up as there are fresh dig marks in the tree for the ladders...so I am pretty confident it was set up for this bow season

Again, being new to bow hunting and not really wanting to piss anyone off I will more than likely leave the whole thing alone but if it becomes a more frequent thing, finding semi permanent stands in decent areas where it technically isn't allowed I wanted to see what other folks who have come across the same scenario do, if anything.
Ok gotcha. So every time I’ve set up in an area I thought was good but also knew there was another preset stand in the area, the presetter will tend to show up there 5-10 minutes before shooting light and blow up the whole area anyway. Essentially, if you think it’s a freshly hung stand, move on, cuz Bubba is gonna screw up your hunt. Now, you can use his stand location in your favor. Potentially be able to set up on the other side of where you think he is accessing his stand and be in the place where the deer come by responding to that pressure. This works better on a weekend when you’re pretty sure he’s gonna be there.

Anything left on NC public is illegal, so I either disable them when I find them or fog the area with Axe body spray, usually both.

Also, when I find that situation, there is zero way I will hunt near that area and stick to spots with no human sign.
Axe body spray bomb?!! This is amazing.

I always say if its on public its available to the public. That being said, don't trust anything without inspecting it. If its safe, hunt it! If you have an encounter with the person that set it up just keep it peaceful.

Thats all assuming no laws are being broken. If its illegal to leave stands on state land then you could be the one that gets in trouble if you walk away and leave it up.

VERY good point which I did not think about at all! you see this is the feedback I was looking for! Outside the box lol

i find some stands people leave up year round. They are supposed to be removed after the season. I considered calling the Dec about it but haven't. I think it depends on the officers attitude if he us going to do something about it or not.

Did you ever call the warden as you were advised to do? Many people set up cameras near their stand. Permanent stands may be illegal where you are at. Criminal damage to property is also illegal and you might be photographed. Report it to the warden and move on. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but three lefts do.

Here in MA it's illegal to hang permanent stands on WMA lands. If I come to one I watch it for the season, if it's there after the season or I know for sure it's been there a while I'll stick a copy of the regulations on it and notify the Environmental Police. I've been instructed in the past to take them down by the EPOs. I wouldn't touch someone else's gear unless I was given clearance to do so. After that I'll take the stand down and leave it at the base of the tree for a while to give the owner a chance to get it. Before the next season I'll go back and if it's still there I'll clear it out of the woods. I'm all about minding my own business but the land is mine too, and I follow the regs. so it is my business.

I had not called yet...I hadn't made it back out to that area to hunt yet so I wasn't going to jump to conclusions. My impression on how the stand was set up it was there for the duration so that led me to this forum post to inquire what others do in those situations.

Even if it is up there I would not mess with it...just not my thing. I may end up calling just to have a conversation about it and see what the wardens mood is on the subject and get some perspective from that person as well. If I do, I will update the thread with what the person says.

Placement of blinds/stands on public land does not restrict others from using the blind/stand or hunting the public land where the blind/stand is located.

Why not read the regulations? That is a copy and paste right out of the Wisconsin hunting regulations handbook. Page 27

Thank you for noting that, I went back and found the exact piece you are referencing!

I note on Huntstand where every stand I come across is located for this reason. If I can see where the potential pressure is going to be, I can try and identify where the deer are going to travel to avoid it.

Leave a note to see if it's still in use. I have a spot similar to what you describe. This guy has a treestand that's about 8' from the ground and I know it's been there for at least 2 years I found it last year but didn't hunt it. There's another close to that one where the tree has actually grown around the stand. Parking is very limited so my plan is if a vehicle is there I'll hunt somewhere else if not I'm going into my ground blind.
