Keep your butt out while climbing, this will keep spikes at proper angle into tree and help from gaffing out ( or splice from sliding down bark). Also keep lower leg straight only bend the knee of rising leg. Practice at lower levels up and down, and tire yourself out like you would after walking in a mile or two.

I tend to keep a little bend I'm my knees. Maybe thats just me, but it keeps me from getting too vertical. Just take baby steps to start with, you'll get more comfortable with them with more practice. I wish I would have tried spurs years ago. They are the cats meow!

Following along as I am about at the same point. Had first two climbing sessions this week maybe a half hour each. Definitely going to take some time investment getting confidence in them. I think I am going to start using a tether instead of just my linemans knowing when I gaff out the fall will come a lot easier.

You also don't necessarily need to flip up your linemans belt. Or even raise both sides of the lineman's belt at the same time. You can slowly roll it up from one side. This will increase your stealth

Another option is to use a rope squeeze or cross your linemans belt in front of you. The latter is easy to do and will significantly limit your fall.
