So the public hunting land that is close to home I have picked out for short day trips and even some after work hunts is badly infested with chiggers and ticks. I took my wife camping there almost two years ago. I took her hiking for photography. We walked up on some does and fawns. One of the fawns we actually thought was blind in one eye from who knows what. When we pulled the images up on the computer, you could actually see the little fawn had some many ticks on its eye it was swollen shut. This was a single night camp over, unfortunately the showers were locked out, so we didn't get to shower that night and by the time we woke up both of us had no less than 50 some odd ticks. You would think I would remember such an even like that but no, I am goofy. Monday after work I went and pre-scouted a couple of quick areas, not wanting to have the same tick incident as last time, I did use a little bit of off, Obviously not enough. This morning I am itching so bad, i think it is worse than poison ivey. I have tons of chigger bites on my legs, the wife has pulled probably 8-10 ticks off me, the tiny tiny ones you can barely see with 47 year old eyes,.
This is my issue, the Public area is bow hunting only, every year a few decent deer are taken and seen from this area, but how does a guy hunt this with any kind of peace of mind of not spraying deep woods off on their hunting clothes and being busted by the deer before I even get out of the jeep.
I have never hunted an area this bad, so I am at a loss.
Thanks for any help guys,
(Yes I know I am scouting too late, I am looking for confirmation and not actually going through the areas I intend to hunt. more or less, long distant scouts.)

x2 you can make your own, or buy sawyers. I always treat my cloths for pre/early season. Used in the military never had issues.
I will order some today, thank you so much, I am tired of itching and we haven't even got a good start yet. I will also look into making my own, that sound like a fun treat. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and I hope you have a blessed week. Thank you for your service as well. It is greatly appreciated.

you should look into the make your own, its just dilute from concentrate and much cheaper.

spray the cuffs, waist bands, neck bands and socks well - tuck your shirt in when you are out there - I use it and my hunting partner doesn't and he picks off multiple ticks each time. I used to get annihilated on another property by chiggers until I learned about Permethrin

Yeah, permethrin and high concentrations of DEET are your friend. Tuck your pants into your boots, and tuck your shirt in. Take clothes off ASAP and wash em separate in hot water.

I messed myself up scouting last weekend in some turkey hunting pants made out of basketball short mesh. Apparently they never got treated or it wore off, because I am eat up with chiggers.

Just part of it sometimes.

Sounds crazy but this has worked for me in the past.... Pantyhose..

I make my wife buy it for to save me the shame at Walmart.

We have bad ticks and chiggers in Western KY and this has helped a lot. Went a whole 3 day turkey hunt without a single tick in some public land where I’ve regularly came out with dozens.

So did you decide to try pantyhose one day to see if they would work or were you wearing your wife's pantyhose one day and realized they worked? There's a distinct difference there. :)

I've actually got some stuff called rhinohide that is basically heavy duty, camo pantyhose material. It's a little warm to wear, but it seemed to work the few times I used it.

Thank you , I will definitely check into that. I am telling you, these things are so bad, and this is the worst part of Oklahoma I have ever had them this bad, not sure what they like so much about this particular part of the state but it is insane, so thank you so much, I know I cant go through this each time I go out, we haven't even got started yet. hehehe.
Thanks again.

Trust me as bad as these are here, I am defiantly not afraid to try that, thank you so much for the tip. I have often heard of guys wearing them to help stay warmer like a base layer in the colder months as well. I haven't tried it but it could well be two fold for them. Thanks again my friend for the tip and I hope you have a blessed week.

That sounds like something to check into as well, I would rather be warm for a while than itching like crazy for a solid week. hehehe.
Thank you sir,
Dale

I’m just north of you in KS and all of my hunting wear for early season gets treated in diluted (5%) Permethrin! The itch is one thing, but tick born diseases are getting way to common to mess with...

Yes sir, I agree, I and only complaining about the itching right now because I am itching, but your right, My dad has got limes disease, and rocky mountain spotted fever, my wife got something this past spring, and we have pulled 10 ticks off of me, so your right, I don't want anything like that the itch is only temporary,. But that is why I was asking, I have hunted October 1st since I was a kid, but I have never hunted a place as infested as this, and never have had to worry about it. I figured there had to be something a guy could use besides OFF and the deer smell you 3 miles away wearing OFF. I am glad so many folks were willing to help get me pointed into the right direction.
You are so right, there is so many more issues with the ticks. The Doctors told us this past spring when my wife got sick there a a bunch of tick diseases and only like 3 test. SO yes sir, there is many more issues that the ticks an cause,.
Thank you for your input sir, it is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again and good luck to your on your upcoming season.
Dale

Just make sure you dont get the permethrin on your skin. Its great stuff but its potent. Supposed to go through several wash cycles and still be effective.

I treat all hunting & work apparel once a month with the home solution of 36% Martins permethrin mixed to a .5% solution. It works as good as the Sawyer mix and it's way cheaper. Once dry the petroleum distalat odor is very weak and is undetectable with a few squirts of your anti odor spray of choice and a little ozone. Ain't no bugs on me...knock on some wood.
