If anything, maybe some spikes. I'm assuming they would be at the lower end of the step and dig into the tree to prevent sliding down...
I actually want my steps to slide down initially. I don't think with any buckle you can get them so tight that they won't. I get them as tight as I can, then when I first step on them I step on each step to set it down into place. After I've done that, rock solid.

Where the skys are so blue!
@DanO, I'm dead serious when I say that if you build a step that's papa-approved, I'm buying a lifetime supply.

I think smooth back is best. Step angled upwards. I cut the wings off of an ameristep, and I will say that 100% they make a surprising difference in stability. The narrow APIs that I have are not as steady under side pressure, but they do pack very well.

I still think a 2" strap would make a difference in stability, but we don't have a good buckle. If somebody would scale up the buckle red is using, that would in my mind be the cat's a$$.

I really think if you straight-up ripped off the Golden buck, you couldn't keep them in stock.

Material should be arriving Wednesday or Thursday and he is going to make about 1/2 a dozen prototypes. I've randomly (or not) selected @redsquirrel and @Nutterbuster to receive a couple to test out - hopefully you'll receive them early next week.
Smooth back, 1" wide, 1" strap slot, 7 degree up angle (number of perfection), toned down traction grip, Ameristep knockoff - still need a name!

Placement of slot will allow it to be expanded to 2" if you want - you could get your jigsaw out or commission a special limited run. Once he's done with the prototypes he'll have a better idea of milling costs, and then he'll get some quotes for water/laser cutting or extrusions.

@DanO not sure how far you've gotten but I'm having second thoughts on the "ameristep" version of the metal step. I think we might be better going with the step with straight sides for silencing purposes. I wrap my steps with vet tape and replace every season or 2 as needed. I do this because if you put stealth strips on there it will turn into a sticky mess very quickly. The flat surface will give more area for the tape to grip. That is exactly how I have it on my golden bucks.

Hasn't received material yet - so not too late to make adjustments. Are you thinking just a copy of the Golden Bucks then without a tail below like Ameristeps? Send me a quick sketch.

That makes sense! Remember in new to saddles. Getting into one next year! Unless I can't take it any more and rig a sit drag up. Haha

For that statement I was referring to this design you originally posted instead of the other

But I can honestly say I don't know how I would like that design in an aluminum step. There is only one way to find out.
I do think all we have to do is make the golden bucks a little bigger. I'm a big fan of the 3/4" steps but I get that more surface area would appeal to more people so I'd say bump them up to 1". Then you pretty much have a loggy bayou step. Stand by and I'll find a picture.

No worries, just commenting :). I hate the sit drag personally but you definitely should get one to start trying it out. Sit and drags are dirt cheap compared to what you will spend if you hang around here long enough.

Loggy bayou step. I think if you duplicated this exact step with solid slots and removed the tips on the back and you would have a great step. I have picked up some of these but haven't hunted on them yet.
