What did you do today that’s related to saddle hunting?

Another thing I did today. Pulled some Canyon Elite back that was out in the woods. Probably due to its smaller diameter, but it doesn't like "long term" knots. This section was in an Alpine. The side that's slightly glazed was against the tree.IMG_8473.jpeg

The good news is it's still pretty strong. I know because I gutted the core and test hung on the mantle only (1' off the ground). Obviously I would never trust my life to just the mantle.

I practiced using my new throwball kit. I remember watching the NY Saddle hunters video but didn’t listen and take their advice. The advice was to disconnect the ball if it’s gonna get stuck, but I tried to pull it through. I got it stuck and broke the line……I can see my throw ball way up there in a tight unintended crotch! I made another out of chain, but ordered another ball and will get this one down at some point:grin:

Yes, this is the hardest lesson I learned. I made a rule to never pull the throwball back through. The ones that look easy will get you too. I also learned I needed 3 throwballs.

I threw the throw chain(thanks for the idea JRB!) and it worked perfectly! This is fun too and I’m having a blast! I’m in the Waddell camp of having fun and for me, all things hunting are about having fun! I’m a decent shot thus far and hit an X trying to get the “lost” throwball down. I tied two consecutive alpine bflies and pulled the cord over the crotch knocking it down. Now I have 2 throwballs again……..I may keep throwing the chain though.

Yesterday I told the cable guy I'm a saddle hunter. Just brought it right out there in casual conversation. Last month I bought camo crocks. I think my journey is complete.

Jeez Anakin Skywalker, you’re supposed to at least TRY being a Jedi before turning to the Dark Side.
Seriously, what’s it been, 4 months according to your profile?
You are a Sith Lord’s model apprentice.
And you seem to have found your people here on SH.

It actually came up when he had to climb the pole to change some kind of transmitter thing or whatever. He was talking about using his linemans belt and spikes back before some OSHA changes and I was like "oh I use one of those when I'm saddle hunting!" He at least knew what I was talking about lol.

My new archery tech caught a whiff of a benign comment I made in passing about my “tree harness” (I don’t always get a knowing look when I say “saddle” casually) to a different employee, and immediately asked me “which ‘saddle’ are you ‘running’? What’s your ‘preferred climbing method’? How ‘high can you get’ (glad he didn’t leave it there) with four sticks? Have you had to take that ‘weak side shot’ yet?”
Needless to say, he’s still my bow tech.

Finally got my leaner out of the woods , but not before leaving my first attempt at a crotchless anchor. This was the first time I’d been in the woods since season ended So I just took my time, and enjoyed being back in the woods! I used a lineman’s belt while sticking once above the leaner. I was by myself but the wife, right up the street, knew right where I was. Goodness it was nice out there!

It was only a 500ish yard haul, but it still kicked my behind. Right as I started walking out, one of my Keepers broke so a wheel fell off……had to do some bushcraftengineering, but made it work and pulled it out like a wagon or cart. I forgot my knife and my snips weren’t very efficient at cutting my paracord……can’t believe I forgot my freaking knife!:rage:

I ordered an Arsenal Rzr Magum 2.0 because I am sick of waiting for everyone else to release their new products before I made my upgrade. I want to practice with the new platform asap. Hope nothing else comes out that makes me rethink this. I have seen TL new Hyperlight but it doesn't collapse as well and I am going for packability and weight, then size.
