2023 Turkey Hunting Thread

Can u hunt on sundays? I’m seeing no
No Sunday hunting except a select few in the fall. They’re still gobbling here and there where they see less pressure. I got a big gobbler last year at the end of May gobbling the whole way back to roost. I hardly called though cause I knew where he was headin

Took my daughters boyfriend out this morning. His first hunt for any animal. Perfect set up, nice bird comes in at 6:15, 25 yards and he misses. I spent the next 15 minutes working a couple other birds that were still hanging around. Get another Tom to come down to us and he squeezed the trigger and all I hear is click. So I grab the 20 gauge I brought and shot it as he was trying to run away. I felt bad but he had 2 opportunities lol

So we then went to the other side of the farm and set up over there. Zero action so at 9am we walked back to where we originally were. Within 20 minutes I was able to get another bird down to us. He was full strut for the last 50 yards. It was awesome. He dropped him and we had a double! Safe to say he is hooked

Great work fellas!!! Congrats!!

Question for any of you turkey sub-specie experts. This picture below is from a video I took in northern Michigan this 2023 turkey season. He's a jake that I could have shot on 3 separate occasions and saw a fourth time. In 30 years of hunting turkeys in Michigan I've never encountered a turkey with white rimmed tail feathers like this. Our local turkeys are supposed to be strictly Easterns but this has a slight appearance of a Merriam. Is this possible or is it most likely just an odd color phased eastern?

Never tried this but figured with the great season had. I wanted to try and do something special. So I attempted making wingbone calls for me and the young man I hunt with. I guess not too bad. These are for him to have. Now if they work and call turkey is a big guess. Will try next year if nothing else cool item to have I guess to remember the hunt.View attachment 84574View attachment 84575
Nice looking calls! Puts mine to shame. The last three turkeys I’ve killed were called into range with a wingbone. Takes some practice but once you’ve got it down it’s a very unique sound, which I think is what makes it so deadly. Check out Catman he has a video on how to use it.

Definitely not scientific but I focus on the mid feathers to notate sub species. In my local Rios, the tips fluctuate a lot depending on local habitat but the mid feathers are always buff.

That being said his look buff like my Rios so who knows.

New to me Turkey Gun blessing. So I was recently, ( and out of the blue) gifted this used NEF 12ga. 3.5” Turkey gun. The barrel was sawed to 21” and re-tapped for a choke. It has a little minor wear in some spots but basically in VG to Exc. condition. I decided to give it a bit of an upgrade. It throws a decent patterns at 25yards with lead too. The best is how light and easy it is to carry around all day. View attachment 84602

2 oz #9 would be a hammer in that gun. They're good little guns, especially cut down like that one.

Anyone have friends/family, or live in colorado? Think we are going to try a merriams trip next year. I've thought on Colorado, Wyoming, or New Mexico. Nothing set in stone, but I'm itching to see some mountains and especially hunt turkeys in said mountains.

I have quite a bit in WI. Seems like you find a lot more birds that won’t give you the time of day, but many are still fired up!
That’s what I wanted to hear, thanks! Just need the weather to
Clear up

Tagged out this year for the first time ever. Last 2 pics are the first bird I kill this year on opening day (also a first) and the other pics are of my 2nd bird killed 5-6-23. Really liking the marsupial fishing pack as a turkey rig! That 3/4 strut Jake and laid down hen have been a deadly combo!

Permethrin is a must for sure!! Ticks are everywhere. As for the therma cell, I could not find mine lol.

Nice didnt know there was a turkey thread going. Getting my butt whooped so far. 1st day I missed a gobbler. I have used a red dot on my SBE 2 for nearly 15 years now. But for nostalgia sake and because of extremely fond memories it brings back, my dad let me take out his SP-10 ga. It has truglo sights on it. I'm used to a red dot being parallax free, sooooo in the heat of the moment I only had the red dot on his head and not in alignment with the back two green dots. Shot about 3 feet over his head lol.
Second day I worked a bird right off the roost. I was in full camo, back against a wide tree, frozen like a statue. And the first hen that looked my way putted and that was that. Not two hours later I was able to get onto a different bird. He kept pulling that game of getting closer, stop gobbling, wait 15 minutes, then gobble again but 150 yards further away. He was henned up and couldn't pull him in so that was over. Third day I didn't hear a gobble. Went out today to try a new spot and didn't hear a gobble or see sign.
Already want to throw in the towel as I absolutely, positively cannot stand being in the woods for green up. I hate, HATE spiders and cobwebs lol

Are you sayin part of the year you dont have spiders and webs to deal with? You already dont have snakes, gators and hogs. I wouldnt know how to act walkin through woods with no webs.
