2024 Off-Season Getting/Staying In Shape Motivation Thread

Did some 2TC practice this morning. Sweated way too much!

This afternoon did the exercise bike and some leg at the gym. Tried a new thing there, on recommendation of Knees Over Toes Guy. Walked backwards on the treadmill. Man, only 1.2 mph but after 5 minutes my hips were really letting me know about it. I need to do that a lot more apparently.

I’ve been doing the backwards on the treadmill thing most mornings for a few weeks now. It’s a little awkward at first but you’ll pick it up quick. 2.2mph quickly became my sweet spot. I’ve also been doing the rest of the exercises in his knee ability zero book a couple times a week, they seem to be helping both my knees.

Lazy today. Beer and playoff hockey!! Go Griffins!! (AHL) gym yesterday and that might be it for this week as I'm really booked the rest of the week, until Sunday anyway

We're getting killed. Cossa ( goalie) didn't show up today. Losing 4-1 with only 18 shots on goal halfway through the 3rd. Better luck Friday I hope

Just back from (just under) 9 miles this AM, I have a 5k fun run with my kid tomorrow AM but not sure how much more running I'll get in, perhaps some treadmill miles it's a busy weekend.

I need to figure out a way to have water on these longer runs, stashing a bottle somewhere doesn't seem that appealing, but running with a water bottle/hydration vest etc seems even less so... So I guess stashing it is.

There is fanny pack style hydration packs, I don't know if that's any better though

I doubt it, I don't like things bouncing and would expect a fanny pack to do so. Tried to put a cheap water bottle in my flip belt, it fit fine but I didn't like it. May need to go to multiple smaller bottles or just leave one beside the trail and hope nobody messes with it.

The last 2 days at work were basically standing on one spot and speaking for 7 hours each day. Anybody know how many calories per hour are burned givin out the learnins? I feels like a lot.

Since I haven't posted in here before I should probably start with my goals:
  • Get stronger
  • Manage ADHD
  • Improve quality of life
  • Do hard stuff

I've been running the Simple & Sinister kettlebell program 5-6 days a week since September and just hit the point where I'm ready to start working the 32kg bell into the rotation. I started with 16kg, moved to 24, so it feels good to be able to do double the weight I was doing in September. I weigh the same as I did in September but I'm down a little over 4% bodyfat. I like the program a lot because there are only 2 main movements (plus 3 others in the warmup and a couple stretches after) but it works my whole body and I don't have to remember how to do a bunch of different exercises, just how to do a few exercises really well.

I'd been meaning to add some cardio to the mix because the doc that's been working with me to manage ADHD recommended it, and today I did 2 miles in about 30 minutes with about 40lbs on my back, which I plan to do at least 2 times a week going forward along with the KB stuff. It works out well to take my pack to work with me and do it at lunch time. Right now my legs seem to be the limiter. Muscles started complaining just about right away. My heartrate was around 168 but I was nose breathing the whole time and didn't find that to be a struggle. I may add 10 more lbs but don't plan to carry anything really heavy unless I actually kill something I need to pack out.

The body fat thing and the weight progression are cool, but honestly the thing I'm happiest about is just the consistency over the past 6 months or so, something I always found really hard with exercise or really anything else.

I do a fair bit of trail running these days, and I use a Solomon race vest with two soft flasks. It carries well and doesn’t bounce much but can get hot after a while. I have the hip belts too but they seem to bounce too much and I end up losing bottles from the holsters. For a middle distance run a flip belt with one smaller soft flask stuffed in can help get you through and stays snug. But yeah, it’s nice to run unencumbered. I’ve never had a problem with people messing with a stashed bottle though if you go that route, just try not to leave it out in the sun if you can

@BTaylor sad faced my being lazy :p so I put a mile run (8:56) in and did the push ups my coach told me too. Should be at the gym in the morning.

But they're having a pig roast before game 3 tonight sooooo.

I should look into the soft flasks, seems like they may be a less-bouncy version in whatever version they are carried. Are they all the same or is there a "get what you pay for" difference between cheap ones and more $$?

Edit: or learn to be less picky. A hand carry would be easiest but it don't like extra stuff. Took me a few months to get used to wearing a watch.

Is there a product similar to a phone arm band for a phone? For a water? Not sure I'd want a water bottle strapped to my arm either, but I did have that thought while I was doing my duty this afternoon, lol.

Love the watch comment! I'm the same way, 100%! Don't know that I'll go without now... being, uh, responsible ? Isn't really my thing hahaha but I'm a time manager when the time comes

I haven’t noticed a big difference between flasks. I use an Amazon special and it’s comparable to name brands

Generally speaking I don't carry water on runs less than 13 miles unless wanting to carry it as practice for a race. However -last summer the furthest distance I had was 10 miles. So with the heat I may carry, not sure yet.

either way - I HATE having to carry anything. I don't even bring my phone if I can help it - sometimes I have to bring my work phone when I sneak away for a run during the work day. I also use a hide a key on my truck hitch so I don't have to have my keys with me. Any way - I've tried several different types of water bottles and soft flasks. I can't stand them on my waist or on a belt and the bouncing of the water. I ended up trying this one linked below and it is my favorite for when I have to carry. I make sure there is no air in the flask, strap it to my hand and sip as needed. Has a really cool bite nozzle that doesn't introduce air into the flask. Because of that there is minimal sloshing. As the bottle empties - I simply tighten the velcro strap to keep it tight on my hand. Then if/when I finish the bottle - there is no air or water in it, I shove it down my pants because I usually wear spandex type running shorts and then I don't even realize it is there. Last thing I want to mention is that for me it took me awhile to get used to how you are supposed to strap it on your hand. Just a learning curve but if you do it right, it's great.

Regarding my running - been very busy with work but I'm still getting out some. Had a great speed session on Tuesday with 4x400, 1600, 4x400. Tomorrow will be a long run - TBD how long.

We did our (unofficial) 5k in 34 minutes this morning. I was very surprised/impressed by my 8year old, who had run a mile once to "train" for this run lol. She had a great time and enjoyed being the first kid to finish (her rules-teenagers didn't count lol) Hopefully first of many dad/daughter runs to come.
