2024 Off-Season Getting/Staying In Shape Motivation Thread

You should look at bagging a “14er” while you are there. Over 50 14,000 ft Peaks that are just begging to be climbed with most having well defined and maintained trails to the top. I bagged about 26 while I was stationed at NORAD and all offer amazing views for sure! One stop shopping right here for everything you need to pick a peak based on difficulty/exposure level and all the tools such as maps, trail photos, directions, etc. to have a safe hike.

In July you want to get started at the crack of dawn and be below the tree line by 2PM to avoid thunder bumpers/lightning. Check them out!

I’ve thought about it. The highest I’ve been is 12,500’, which is where I took this picture of Mt Massive which is over 14,400’. I think this is the closest 14er to where I’ll be and also one of the tallest in CO.

I’ll have to look into it and some other options.

Well, I don’t want to spoil it for you, but if you make it this is what it looks like on top of Mt. Massive! It’s Awesome!IMG_7264.jpeg

After a little more research today Mt Massive might be a little much for the rest of the group I’ll be with. Mount Sherman is looking like a real possibility though.
Sweet, I climbed Sherman. It’s kind of a rock pile, but there really is no bad 14er when you are standing on top. Quandary is nice and real popular, it’s a little north of Sherman. Hope you get the opportunity to go, but whatever you do, have a great time on your trip!

It's been a full week off of running. Turned in 8'50" for my mile today. Seems awful fast but that's what fitbit says. I'm very happy with that! Trainer tomorrow, we need to talk about recovery. Took way too long from last week lol

Fastest way to recover is a lot of BCAAs or just really good meat protein and good rest. Light stretching after working out if you over 30, never stretch before. Warm up before, stretch after.

I decided to try to build mileage by adding in some easy/short 2 a day runs during the week, nothing too crazy as I don't want to get hurt, but going to experiment a bit doing 2-3 miles in the AM some days. Started today with 2 this AM, will do another 4-5 this evening.

Evening edit: did 4 more. I'm liking this break up the day thing after one day, we'll see how the week(s) go

Are there benefits to a supplement like bcaa/eaa if you're getting adequate protein? According to fitbit I'm at 149g before in eat this delicious cow, so I think I'm ok

Technically in a perfect world if your eating quality protein and enough if it you can go without BCAAs, I like the BCAAs regardless bc we don’t live in a perfect world and by drinking them it absorbs a bit better/faster than eating steak.

I woke up and ran a mile for the first time in a while, the only runs I’ve been doing the past 4 years has been my 2 miler for the Army twice a year. 6:22 logged, not bad compared to the last time I ran a mile (5:44) I figured I’d be around that time as my 2 miles is usually less than 14 min. Felt good and also solidified the fact that cutting these trees by hand and shovel digging a pond has kept my cardio up to par as if I’d been running the past year.

It depends on what type of exercise you are doing. If I'm just running miles I do the stretching and then just run. However if I'm doing a speed workout, hill repeats or something else I do dynamic stretching AND a warm up run before starting the work out.

Yes! Exactly. Stretching if doing just a run or light stuff is great. But if your doing more HIIT or explosive type stuff Dynamic and warming up is required. I unwillingly figured this out young, during FB and track in HS I was the only person that would actively avoid stretching and always hated it, low and behold I was eventually the one of very few people who never got injured. Fast forward a decade or 2 and makes sense, I was keeping things tight before explosive movements, warm up wasn’t required then I was 15-17 years old lol the biggest thing I’ve found different with age is the post activity mitigation has gone up ALOT. But at 35 I can still roosta like I yoosta.
