My Turkey hunting experience is fairly limited. I hunted hard my first year about 3 years ago until I got one and didn’t hunt the past two years.
Only got to hunt one day this AL season but it was awesome. Saturday I walked into a long finger field on national forest and the grass was super high and really didn’t think they would be in the field so I worked my way 10-20 yards off the field to the end and plopped down off the field where the grass was lower. It was a foggy so i figured they might wait a bit to come down. I pushed up against a tree and took a nap. About 40 mins later I got awoken to the loudest drumming I’ve ever heard. I’ve heard of guys talk about this but it was unlike anything I have ever heard. It was like I could feel the vibrations, if that makes sense. IT GOT ME FIRED UP!
I propped my shotgun up and threw in my mouth call as a hen worked her way into the field. It was awesome to see her cluck and yelp. Then he hit that gobble and it shook me! He was off below me to my left side (off hand side) no more than 20 yards away but just out of sight. The hen left the field edge and took him with her. He was slow to leave as I would pure and cluck and he would respond. After about 30 mins he stopped responding and I went quite. I figured it was time to finish my nap.
About 30 minutes into my nap I hear a gobble, probably 150 yards away. I responded and he fired right back up. I talked and then would shut up, then talk and then shut up. He kept getting close and closer. This went on for like an hour and I really felt like I should have changed positions to draw him in more but never did it. I feel like he was right on the other side of the field edge and just would not cut across or even out to the open at all. About that time I heard some quick steps off to my left and it was coyote at about 10 yards. I turned quick and blasted it without much thought.
No turkeys were heard the rest of the day besides some hens. I’m so ready for next year. Hopefully things will line up to go more! What a blast.
