8mm Oplux questions & uses

I just did a practice rappel off the column in my office and there’s significantly less friction with the Oplux. Not spooky and not anything the autoblock can’t put a quick halt to. Also, that was with 1 carabiner.

Same as last week when I decided to rappel, I’ll work it out 1 stick off the ground and report back. FWIW I’m 6-3, 260 for those keeping score at home.

Definitely interested in following!
I’m loving how compact this rope is, so much less bulk.

Hopped on a tree in the backyard this afternoon and went to the top of one stick (6’) and rappelled down several times. 1 carabiner is sufficient, 2 is a lot of friction so I think I’ll go with 2 at height the first time then go to 1 after that if it’s as sluggish as it was today.

I also think I’m going to slip a section of 1” tubular webbing over my Oplux to further aid removal from the tree. It’s not difficult to retrieve as is, but I do that with my LB and it works wonders letting the rope slide around the tree without friction from the bark.

Lastly, I think I’ll also be adding the Petzl Triangle. I ignored it as unnecessary until someone mention undoing it to go around limbs and the light bulb went off (or on, as the case may be), lol.

Oplux, TRC and a figure aider in a distel hitch all source from DanO... :)

Man, reading through this thread is like trying to decipher greek to me.

So, I cant splice an eye into 8mm oplux? I have to do a figure 8 knot?

I got a 30' length of oplux from Dano (thanks btw you are awesome) and I plan to use that for my tether and rappel down. Now realizing I should have got 40'. Life is more expensive when you don't know what you're doing.

I have a madrock safeguard and plan to use a beal jammy as a backup.

I modded my helium hawk to 22.5 inches and added the harken 150 rope cam. Using 5mm oplux for my stick. Headed to rei today for some tubular webbing to make my aider. Think I may do a 3 step and alter later if I only need a 2 step. Have an artisan outdoors top stick platform coming.

Dont have linesman belt yet. Last saddle had a built in one. I have a ropeman 1 on the way.

So, all I need to do is......
tie a figure 8 in my tether to girth hitch
get my beal jammy on the tether
get either the kong or petzl triangle
get the rope best suited to ropeman 1 for my linesman belt (will oplux work?)
And I'll probably need a longer tether after I get all this worked out

What am I missing?

-why do you need a kong or Petzl triangle?

-30’ will likely be plenty for rappelling from 25’ or lower. If you’re using the OpLux for ascending SRT I’d recommend 45’. DRT you’ll need even more.

I saw the sewn Oplux tether from WE. But I'm looking for a 35' length with a sewn eye to use as a rappel line. Can't find a source. Might just have to settle for a fig8 loop knot on the end instead of the eye...
If you call Sterling ropes (1-800-788-7673 ), they will cut OPLUX to your length and add a sewn eye. 2 week turn around though.

For my girth hitch because it will handle side load. That way I can get around branches without feeding my whole line through the eye.

Oplux is 8mm and ropeman 1 is 10-13mm rating. Predator lineman on doublesteps.com or HTP 10mm should work with your ropeman 1.

Yeah. Figured. My madrock safeguard isnt rated for 8mm oplux either but it works. Was just wondering if anyone had tried it successfully. Ill end up with 10mill though.

Do you know how much was the sewn eye? And how much was it per foot?

I didnt have a sewn eye and I was worried the figure 8 rope would take up a lot of footage but it didnt at all. I'd just get it from eastern outdoors with a quicker turn around and tie a quick figure 8 and you're off to the races. Not a bulky knot at all on oplux.
