What aider are you using? It matters. But the technique is 'fish' your foot into the loop rather than trying to climb it like a ladder.
If you get your foot into the loop as far as you can... then move your foot OUT TO THE SIDE to take up the slack, you can then slowly put your weight on it knowing that your foot is secure and you won't get any surprises.
I use a 4 step aider nothing else and its not that hard (nor slow) to do if you take your time and make sure that your foot placement is correct...I'll gladly sacrifice a little time just to not have the weight nor potential clank!
If you want to make it easy, take the time to tend your linesmans belt as you move up the Aider. It gives you another point of balance and takes strain off your bodyTeach me master!
