I just bought 200 feet of All gear cherry bomb rope and used it for SRT and Ddrt and this rope is outstanding, Worked great with my rope wrench with xt hitch, rope runner, isc d4 and grigri2. I can definitely see myself buying more in the future.

How much did it set you back? Good rope sure is expensive. I use this that I bought off of Amazon:
OPG ATAR static kernmantle rescue rappelling rope 11mm x 100 feet tactical Black UL ANSI NFPA USA
I've been very happy with it so far. I like that it's black rather than a bright color.

All Gear is an excellent company. Not as known as some of the bigger rope companies but very legit. Their customer service is outstanding and they make great rope and cord. They have always taken care of us. Nice to see them mentioned.

I talked to a thomas daly at all gear about his blue craze rope as well. Cant wait to put some more time on the cherry bomb rope. I did a 75 foot descent with my rope wrench and bee line prusik and its soo smooth. Feels very similar to my tachyon but it grabs my 8mm hitch cords better.

Do you use a base anchor (ie the rope is tied at the base of the tree when you climb) or just a top cinch?

This is my first year in the saddle. I am planning on srt and the yoyo method.
I am going to order the cherry bomb rope tomorrow you recommended.
I am also planning on getting the ISC d4 descender.

What else should I buy? I know I need an ascender. What do you recommend.
If I have the ISC d4 will I also need the grigri?

Thanks for the help.

Depends on how much rope you plan on carrying with you and the hunting height that you're going to do most of your hunting from! If you carry 50 feet of rope and plan on hunting at 20 feet you can easily do a base anchor then ascend the rope! If you only plan on carrying 30 feet of rope then you'll have no choice but to use a canopy anchor with a piece of retrieval line attached! Are you going to use this rope for hunting only? I use alot of my ropes for recreational climbing and hunting, This year i'm using olive drab htp and i'd recommend that over the cherry bomb for hunting only purposes, It's more weather resistant, abrasion resistant and its a true static rope. Go to rwrope.com and look up 7/16 sterling htp!

Ok I'll do that. Thanks for the advice.

What do you recommend for a beginner: the yoyo RADS technique or something else like HAAS?

I am buying gear and getting setup this week.

YoYo/SRT is really simple. I could see techniques using foot/knee ascenders and both legs if you're really out of shape, or for work (climbing up and down trees all day, swinging chainsaws and such). But for the average guy going 20-30' up one time, yoyo is easy and fast and very minimal on equipment.

I use the haas velox for recreational climbing but for hunting its overkill and a ton more money. Rads will suit you fine. The haas is for advanced climbers and wouldnt be very useful in a rads system if you could even use it at all. The grigri puts a bend in the rope unlike normal srt ascent devices which is why its good to use with a rads system or as a descent device.

I appreciate all of the help.
Ok so I'm going to use the yoyo method.
Here is my question:

Should I buy the ISC D4 or the Grigri2?

The D4 has anti panic and lock modes, grigri2 does not. How much climbing experience do you have? Also is this going to be used for hunting only or hunting and recreational climbing?

Tracker,

I am going to experiment with this. I have a GriGri2 for my harness and a Ropeman I can use for my foot loop. Will it be too much work to not have a pulley?

I don't climb high and want to keep the gear as minimal as I can

Should work just fine, You dont need a pulley it just makes it a tad easier.

I ascend rads, I have used a pulley but didn't think it was worth the extra noise and gear. Just route the rope through a carabiner and save the money.

Might be different for longer ascents but not for our purposes.

For what it's worth I think RADS is great for what we do especially for a beginner. You can switch to descending really easily and quickly if you decide you need to, and set-up is pretty straight forward.
