Bolt Climb Video

I got a $50 Amazon gift certificate from work. For that I got (35) 3/8-16 X 6" grade 8 hex bolts and a 3/8 wood bit. I'm going to try to make a handle for the bit.
I bought a 3/8 inch wood bit from Menards as a backup to my E Z cut and that thing drills like doggie doo doo. I have to sharpen that bugger up someday. I will say that I did not exactly get a brand-name bit. I think Irwin would work better. The EZ cut drill is fantastic though!! I didn't get the hand drill, just the bit to put in the drill.

The one I ordered was an Erwin I hope it’s good.
So you use a cordless? Do you set up trees beforehand?

I use the hand drill. I'm setup and hanging 10 bolts+/- in less than 15 minutes(the first time). That's approximately 20feet. Next time I get to the tree its a 5 minute setup max.

That’s awesome! I’ve read that some guys go out after the seasons over and prep trees for the following season.

I had a lease last year, otherwise I would have prepared in September. All public this year, so no holes in county land.

Something to consider in regards of the sound of a cordless drill spooking deer.

September of 2017, I pre-drilled my first tree of the up coming season. After drilling ten holes I came straight down pulling bolts. As soon as my feet touched the ground I looked up and saw three rack bucks traveling the edge of a thicket no more than 30 yards from where I was standing. This couldn't have been more than 30 seconds after I had drilled the last hole. Even though they were traveling, I believe that they had to have heard the sound of my drilling.

With that said, I believe that deer associate danger with bad experiences though scent, sounds and sightings. Evidently they hadn't had a bad experience with the sound of a cordless drill motor. Even with that experience I've never drilled a tree with a cordless drill motor and immediately hunted it. But, I have drilled numerous trees using a cordless drill and a day or two later hunted them with some positive experiences.

I've hand drilled hundreds of trees since 1983 but have fallen in love with a cordless drill motor. I always have my hand drill with me but only use it on rare occasions. The difference in drilling a hole is 5 seconds with no effort and 30 seconds with effort. At my age I choose the 5 seconds with no effort method.

Unfortunately that doesn't work due to the spring growth. Holes that have been drilled during the hunting season close up as the tree resumes the growing process.

Trees do grow over holes just have to touch them up

Have you guys ever seen or heard of anyone doing this with a power drill? Or would it be too loud

Also, what hand drill are you using?
Its usually windy around here. I sometimes use a dewalt drill on field edges with a small pillow wrapped around it. Try to use it as slow as it goes.

Yep. Also a good reason never to leave your bolts in for an extended period of time. You may never get them out

I like leaving them in on some trees. They do get tight though. I need to come up with some sort of lever that will pull them out straight.

This thread is grabbing my attention. I've always been an EZ Climb screw-in guy but they ain't cheap, especially if you want to pre set a couple dozen stands. The screw in Ameristeps are cheaper but they absolutely suck to install without a tool.
I've improved my system for a stick system, but it still blows to carry, install, remove, pack and carry after the hunt. I hate carrying sticks.
I like the idea of bolts and maybe doing some trees in grade 8 and some with the carbon. Any links to where the carbon can be purchased?

Check out the 5.25 lb thread. Rockwest Composites. I ordered 28 last week.

You could probably use a large nail puller on grade 8s. Never tried it. I would use it a carbon bolts

I had a couple Carbon bolts that went in hard last night. They came out hard too but I didn’t give up easily. I had a mix of grade 8 and Carbon bolts with me. Some of the grade 8s went in hard too but I left those in that tree. I’ll be back in it during the rut.

Did you say you would use it on Carbon bolts?

Sorry

Wouldn't

They’re a little harder to get out with no head to get a grip on. So far they have been solid and nice to work with. I have 14 of them in my pocket and when I get back to my truck I have to think about where I put them because they weigh nothing. With Grade 8s, I always know where they are.
