Looking for insight on a good carabiner to use with Ropeman 1. Looked around on the REI website for info and it seems like a pear shaped design with locking capabilities would be best. Does that sound right???

Yep, pearbiners work good but are a little larger than just your standard black diamond caribeaner.

That’s perfect. Thanks for the pic. I was leaning toward the Black Diamond but don’t have any prior knowledge to go on as far as purchasing these things.

Amazon sells them in 3 packs for a pretty good price..
The pearbiner is made by black diamond as well and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it they will both work great.. Amazon has the pearbiner also for like 14 bucks

Any reason more people don’t use auto lock carabiners? They look easier/faster with no risk of forgetting to screw the lock down...

If people are using them, which ones do you like?

No idea, but I agree for the same reasons. I prefer Petzl triact lock biners. If it supports my weight, I use something with an auto lock (but still double check) and buy from the main climbing companies, such as camp, petzl, DMM, black diamond, etc.

Lots of somewhat cheaper stuff on Amazon or ebay, but I can't accept the risk just to save a few dollars

I've been using these with my ropeman and like them better than the black diamond ones. More compact and the locking part feels better to me. Like to know if there is a reason for all love for black diamond? I'm new to this all to. Screenshot_20190513-220907.png

I like black diamond prolly because every caribeaner I used in the past before saddlehunting was from a treestand safety harness manufacturer... I used HSS, Summit, and muddy, I believe the summit and muddy where both steel caribeaner which where heavy and the HSS honestly feels cheap.

Do a Google search for top rated rock climbing carabiner and you will see black diamonds name a lot. There is possibly better ones on the market but for the price weight and the fact that a reputable company is putting their name on it and marketing it, that is enough to make me a fan.

Arthritis is making it difficult for some as the opening action is very difficult. That is my problem with auto locking carabiners. I went with
Climb X USA Ultra HMS Aluminum Screwgate Locking Rock Climbing Carabiner - 22kN
They work great for me and because they are round they work with the ropemans very well.

Rock O from Rock Exotica or DMM Oval. I use only auto locking coming from the arborist side.

Personally I prefer the old-fashioned oval with round cross section. They seem less likely to incline to dangerous loading. Fusion Ovatti is a screw gate and comes in steel ($5.99 and the gate is excellent). For the triangle-shaped, I like the aluminum Fusion Swift auto locker ($10.99). You can pay more for other stuff that fusion, Petzl, or whom-ever has. JMHO...

Made in Tiawan, UK and Canada, FWIW. I'm good with those.
