For us Newbies, what should we be looking for when purchasing carabiners for various saddle/platform/bridge/linemans belt/you get the idea.
Is there something on the specs we should be looking for to make sure we have carabiners strong enough for what we're doing? Is there a source we can use to make sure we're getting good stuff?

I just get mine at REI from the climbing section. Look for ones that have a locking gate (screw type) and make sure they have a kN rating on them.

What should the kN rating be?

1 kN is about 225 lbs. All of my locking type are in the 24-25kN range. I do use some wire gate type that I think are 18kN. Because you won't be falling very far, you won't need to have a super high rating, but it is nice to have the piece of mind of a locking type.

Look in the arborist supply catalogs like Treestuff.com and Wesspur to name a few. Auto lockers are nice for sure.

Certainly A screw locking Biner for use on the tether when going around the trunk. But i use all locking biners or screw delta links for safety reasons

Avoid steel biners like OEM ones supplied by HSS, they are boat anchors.

I'd also like biners with non-reflective silenced coating like Linex but I doubt anyone makes such a thing.

The metolius linked above is one of my go-to’s

It fits perfectly in a rooeman1 for silent use. :)

I like the twist lock kind. I tried a triple action and realized it’s not ideal for one hand operation which is important. I have some screw locks and they are good too but I don’t like the possibility of forgetting to screw them, not recommended for ones you’ll be opening a lot like a linemans belt. I like the way the pear shape works for my bridge to tether but prefer D shape for my lineman or other uses, seems to give the most room. And then of course aluminum for lightweight and 22kn min is what I shoot for. I have some Black diamond, petzl, cmc, and the ones that came with the evolution and they all work fine for me.

Oval carabiners would work the best for what we do, You want a double locking triple action biners! Brand doesn't matter as long as its a reputable brand. Rock exotica, notch, petzl, dmm,Etc.
