Changes for 2024?

Thanks...I've decided I'm never trying a hybrid setup. I lean so much and only sit maybe 1 hour out of a 12 hour all day sit.
I will still use it on maybe a true all-day sit 9+ hours or maybe as a last-minute preset so I don’t have to leave my saddle platform. It works for some guys. For me it’s become specialized situations only.

Also a dedicated leaner, and not a very good hunter truthfully. I am curious though, how often do the 1-2 o'clock shots come up and cause an issue? I'm very much considering a hybrid set up, but with a retrograde which still has cables to be in the way

I feel that first sentence on a primal level.
Anyway, I think the 1/2 o’clock shots are a byproduct of how the tree selection fits into deer traffic. Where I had my LW stand, the deer came from 1, 6, 7, and 11 so I would say 20-30% of my shot opportunities at any given deer had fallen in that wedge.

I setup all the time so that the best shot might be at 12 o'clock. I want the tree between me and the deer for as much of the deer's approach and shot as possible. Also, I'd say even for 11 o'clock that I get on the side of the platform. So, it's a big deal for me if those cables are a nuisance.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Interesting. Hopefully I can find a lock on to test out. I can't say I've ever had to much thought into footwork, the x wing has served me well so far in my limited shot opportunities. Pretty sure I just lean and twist or contort and make it work lol. I can put side pressure on my platform but don't unless I'm bored and figiting. I'm mostly interested in the seat part of hybrid anyway so maybe I'll scheme up a different plan...

Not to be harsh, but this is what cracks me up about gear advice sometimes. It's absolutely zero problem locking down a .5 for all the side pressure you want to throw at it. You just have to do it correctly. Note the strap placement.

The cables, depending on your style, may or may not get in your way much. That's valid, but they don't for me. I tend to be purely a leaner but almost standing upright. I sit knees against the seat to rest my legs on occassion. That's when they get a little in the road.

And yes, a lot of my shots do happen behind the tree. I tend to set them up that way.

What am I changing for 2024? Pretty much nothing. I'm dialed. I plan to do more 2-sticking than 1-sticking. Just a little quicker and easier imo, good compromise between 1 and 3 sticks. Imagine that. That's probably it.

I can tell from your pic that it won't work for me.

I am going away from ROS besides pre-set trees.

Over half my sits this year was just using 2 sticks with cable aiders. Might leave the 3rd at home

Going to dabble I'm using steps as a climbing method.

I added rappelling and a crossbow to my toolkit in 2023.
In 2024 I want to try some rope climbing techniques. I’ve been eyeing NYSH and JRB and some other channels for a few years now and I will finally be diving in.
On that note, I know paracord presets are a thing but on private land, does anyone leave actual climbing rope presets? Which rope would you use and why? I’m currently rappelling with HTP and I love it for its durability and price tag but I was also intrigued by @TreeRecon testing on C-IV and I really think RescTech has some great qualities as well.
Yea I have 4 spots with ropes in the tree. I use 11mm kmiii max. It's designed for heavy exposure and can take a beating. I wouldn't do it with C-IV.

Climb at your own risk, but I'm planning on getting a few seasons out of it. I do inspect it prior to climbing.

One will be sent off for break testing next fall. I'm expecting it to break around 7200lbs +

Unless I discover I absolutely hate it, I'll be 2TC next fall. No more sticks unless I decide to run in the night before and set up a tree for a really quick climb in the morning.

I hunt a lot of private and the rope methods are calling to me as well… but with squirrels etc I’d be real nervous hanging by a rope that’s been out there for two months. If I go this route it’ll be paracord.

Nothing but squirrels here and they seem to leave it alone at all my spots. I've never been bitten by a squirrel, but I bet their teeth aren't as sharp as the ascenders I use ;)

Save a ton of money by not spending it on more gear that brings me no closer to that 140" deer. Gunna scout my butt off this off season come January. Public I hunt is fantastic, but I over pressured it this year and need to expand my horizons.
The only difference between you and the guy who gets a giant every year is he picked the right tree. All it boils down to. Scout, scout, scout

I’m gonna spend less time researching gear and more time scouting deer. At this point I’ve got all the stuff I need. My time is best spent practicing and scouting and expanding the number of various hunting regions im familiar with. I’d like to spend more time this year working hard to make money so I can afford more time hunting more out of state next year.

The only new gear I need is another freezer

Thanks for the info. Where do you get that rope?
Also, would you be comfortable leaving HTP in a preset?

I personally wouldn't. I use KMIII because it's kernmantle and wears like iron. Would you be ok leaving C-IV and HTP out for multiple seasons? Most likely, it's just not intended for said use.

I get mine from Arbsession

Same. But I’ve told myself that before and I have a new saddle and platform on the way ha. In reality I need to scout more and just find better hunting spots overall.
