How many of you guys do your own cleaning of your wood burner flue?
I've always paid someone to do mine but he's expensive. Just wondering about doing it myself. Any tips?
Thanks!

I helped my father-in-law do it a couple times. It seemed pretty straight forward and fairly easy albeit a dirty job as expected. I think he told me he bought the brush and all the extensions from Tractor Supply for less than $150.

Yeah, I figure it ain't rocket science. Just wondering about tips to reduce the mess and products you guys like.

I do my own and it's very easy. Get the right size brush for your flue and it really only takes a couple of passes.

I do it from inside the house using the flexible fiberglass poles that screw together with a brush on the end - since I have a stone cap over my chimney, I can't get a rod down from the top. The only thing I do to help with the mess is to have my wife or daughter run the vacuum while I pull the brush down the chimney and try to catch as much of the dust and ash as possible right out of the air.

One other tip based on a story.... I have a round aluminum chimney liner inside my flue and didn't bother to screw the pole sections of the brush together as tightly as I should have. As i advanced the brush up the chimney liner, the spiral of the liner UNSCREWED the top section of fiberglass pole and it fell off and became stuck in the liner! It was a major pain to fish it out of there... Lesson: screw the sections together tight.

I spent the morning watching...what else...Youtube vids, and also reviewed the manuals I have for my 2 wood stoves.
I pretty much have a plan.
The only thing I haven't decided on is which brush to buy and what diameter rods to get.

I have also come to realize the fiberglass rods come in super handy for everything from pushing electric dog fence wire through hard to reach areas to busting loose plugged culverts also. I borrowed my fathers so many time this year I considered buying my own and I don't even have a chimney to clean.
