Ok just picked up a singer fashion mate 237 today..it runs but slow which is fine considering the age..now you guys who picked a older machine up..how do you guys go about cleaning the machine? What do you use..i feel i really need to clean this and oil it up good and possibly get a new leather belt to make it perform like it should..i briefly looked at a manual online but had to leave the house so i didnt really delved into this..what tips do you guys have for a newbie like me and others?
Thanks in advance

Machine oil on all moving parts. Probably a face plate on the needle side you can remove and oil gears behind it. And everything underneath. A manual to your specific machine may have some other places to look

I would wipe everything big that I could and use a air compressor on it too, then oil it

You should check the 'sticky' discussion threads on quiltingboard.com under the home page section "Vintage machines..." Good luck!

^^^ this^^^. Singer recommends kerosene for cleaning and a quality machine oil (singer oil).

You may find this useful:

You should be able to find the manual online along with parts and plenty of restoration info out there

If you don't want to pull it apart, thin yer sewing machine with oil and run it. Clean any greased gears you can reach. I would also save later headaches and check the hook timing which isn't all that complicated to do/adjust.

That is the way it should be! We are all hunters after all. I'm in the same boat. Cut the deer up last weekend!
