Convincing OnX or similar to update satellite imagery yearly...

There used to be an app that did the geo tagged image, I forget who the hell made it, I had it then it went under. Google stated a few years ago they had the ability to now take a picture of every inch of earth like every 2 days. I mentioned how that was awesome yet scary.

I want one of them to take the google imagery and throw it right in the pooper. Bing has WAY BETTER imagery.

I have to say... I really do like OnX.

I prefer google earth overall for the ability to organize into multiple levels of folders and overlay them. BUT.....
my least favorite thing about google earth is having to email, download, and then upload every single track or waypoint from my phone onto the computer, then onto google earth.

The simplicity of OnX is awesome. I track all my waypoints, and the next time I log in on the computer.... there they are.

I do wish they had some other symbol options, like changing colors, a symbol for beds, a symbol for mast/food sources etc... but, it is very close to a perfect product. I will be buying a premium membership after Christmas.

I second this, OnX is great for my uses and makes scouting areas a breeze. The labeling could use work, but overall my favorite phone app. It’s not always 100% on boundary lines, but sure does get you very close.

I just wish there was an app that let you put a geo-tagged image as a pin. Click on the pin on the map and have the option to scroll through pics you took at the area.

OnX has that option now.

I would rather they just get all imagery with leaves down.

Or maybe I don't. There was a time when cyberscouting worked well for me, but now everybody and their brother does it, usually just a recipe to run into hunters.

So I got to thinking the other day - with the technology we have, and the money being dumped into the hunting industry, we should be able to get this done.

I wonder what the cost of getting the images uploaded yearly would be, and if there's enough room in memberships, dues, etc. on an App like OnX to cover that and them still turn a profit.

I would pay double, potentially triple, to have what I know to be an accurate, up to date image of the property I'm looking at.

Yes I still find old data useful. But I'm losing hours looking at features that no longer exist.

Anyone else interested in something like this? Wonder what it takes to put it into motion...

Yes Ive been thinking this for a LONG time. It's the only complaint I have with OnX. Can't tell you how many times I prove my map wrong while post season scouting or when going in blind to hunt and I get there and question if I'm in the right spot because it's so different!

I have a buddy that works at a 5 sided gov’t installation and I’ve sent in personal requests for real time aerial photos for duck scouting purposes before, but year old aerials would be nice so I wouldn’t have to wear out my welcome asking for reconnaissance.

That will be an after season project for me.

I have my own maps loaded into gaia with overlays of things like forest cover/species data from the state DNR GIS. And in some areas my own contour data. That thread just scratches the surface.

another issue with OnX is property owner info is also dated. I bought land 18 mos ago and it still shows the previous owner - OnX also shows old views of my lease before logging over 2 years ago. Huntstand shows my purchased land ownership correctly plus the lease imagery is more current. Problem for me is I had logging down 2 years in a row so who knows when I'll get the updated images on either, but Huntstand has been a more useful app for me this year. With as much logging as I have had, and pine planting now underway - my lease will change drastically over the next few years - I'd love to get a map made by Hunterra but it's going to be too transient to invest into right now.

What's your county's speed in updating property records and making them available? Did huntstand's property info update sooner?

not sure exactly but it was under a year - I want to say 6 months. My assumption is Hunstand refreshed the GIS data and Onyx didnt over the past 18 months

I am seeing the same thing on my properties. I like OnX, but this has been a major disappointment this season.

Basemamaps outdoor maps might a good tool to add as far as mapping goes. When i first starting using onxmaps you use to be able to zoom in on area see how tall trees are and if the are pine trees or not. now you can't do that anymore i dont understand the decline of imagery of course google earth was always the best but why the decline onxmaps is really puzzling to me.

You and me both.

Onx allows you to add a pic to any pin you drop on the map. I don’t need more than 1 pic of any given rub or scrape

Onxmaps and Basemaps are complete opposite of each other. Basemaps have great Varity maps to choose from and the images are very good. The cons are its not very user friendly it doesn’t show all the public land that available in Wisconsin also doesn’t have offline maps, trail that are available. Onxmaps has very poor satellite internet images on its maps it appears getting worse every year. Over all onxmaps is just a better product in my opinion. However if your hunting hilly country like am this year or if you planing hunt west I would buy basemaps for a month and copy all your way points tracks shapes onto your onxmaps.

Huntstand is supposed to be pretty good from what I herd. Maybe I will try it this year.

I just wish onX added a feature to allow you to scroll thru dates, similar to google earth. Even if it was limited to desk top use.

They recently updated the maps for my area from an early spring image to a late summer image. All the green makes everything look the same

The simple ask is just yearly updated pictures. or semiannually. the cost could easily be absorbed by users. I can use google earth to go back over the years. I just want something on my phone that is recent. I am ok with using something else on the computer at home with more detail and options.
