I just purchased 12 new steps for the season and am wondering what the preferred method is to get them tighter. I am currently fooling around with the idea of carrying 4 cranford rope steps and 2 muddy pro sticks. Starting at the tree with the four cranfords and then using the pro sticks further up the tree. Is anyone using a similar method?

That gives me something to think about. Carrying some Cranfords for a little extra.

Search around, there is a video from cranford that has a good tip on getting them tight

As much as I like streamlining things I can't quite afford to. So I end up grabbing random stuff of the classifieds here. I have lone wolfs, Wild edge and silent approach steps and am likely gonna use a mixed approach like you are planning. Haven't figured out what the magic combo will be yet though.

I’m using (3) 22” Hawk Heliums with a cranford step as my first step and then one between each step and one on the back side of the tree behind my platform. I can get to 17’ to my platform with this setup .

I have got three cranford rope steps on the way and when I get them I am gonna try using them in combination with a aider and if I like that I might pick up a few more for more height!

I have only used mine to preset trees and hang cameras so far. I am happy with the tightness I get by just pulling hard on the return line and then while still pulling, pull it tight through the woopie. Occasionally, after some use I may pull it a second time.

I get them very tight there's a video some where of the owner teaching how to properly tighten ropes makes it alot easier

Got a blown disc in my back. trying to get through the season before going under the knife. I am looking to lighten my load. Using Helium sticks now at nearly 10lbs. Thinking of switching to the cranford strap ons. How much weight reduction would I be getting and how many steps does it take to get to a reasonable hunting height? They look like they will at least fit into my pack instead of strapping to the side.

I space mine closer than most at 18” so that I can keep three points of contact and not have to stretch much. You will save a little on weight but not much. They pack smaller and quieter but take longer to climb. For me it’s worth it, I was really tired of carrying sticks. For me 12 steps can go 18’

I use 5 steps with a 3 step aider on the first one. 22-24” spacing between them gets my platform to around 15 feet. Not the highest but for the thick areas I hunt it’s plenty

The 18” is about my speed. Good info. Now to do some shopping. Thanks!

How do you attach the aider? Is there a spot to clip to or do you just hang it on the step?

That is what i do ; i use 1-4 cranfords at the bottom with my feet on the ground usually just use 2 and then my lone wolf stcks to get up.

This is the video you want: he goes stick, steps, stick, treestand/platform from the bottom of the tree, so he can have his most stable footing at the bottom and top of his climb. Smart IMO.

I bought 5 of them last week, got them absolutely love them. I ordered 5 more and an adjustable aider from wild edge. I might just ditch the aider and stick with the steps. I will know tomorrow for sure. As soon as the mailman drops them off I'll be up a tree with them.
