Has anyone tried the Sparrow or the Sparrow 200R for SRT? Since the Safeguard seems as though it’s not available and no timetable, or even intent, to return to market. I have been looking at these and they seem like they are built/designed for this sort of thing! Any input before I pull the trigger would be good. Seems a better system than the safeguard, if I’m doing my research right. May be a bit cumbersome by the way it looks though!

Wow that thing is pricey! I've been using a Lifeguard in the lawn trimming trees and have had it "release" one time after taking tension off and intentionally trying to get it to release and experienced no noticeable drop, it grabbed right away. My plan is to back up the Lifeguard or remove it entirely when at height with a friction hitch so I don't experience any surprises when on the platform. Looks like the Sparrow would be a good choice though, I'm ok with removing/backing up the Lifeguard though for that price.

I guess I’m willing to spend if it works. It may be overdoing it, but from what I’m reading and researching it’s what it’s intended for. So, life on the line if I’m up 20ft+. Call me careful. Lol. Thanks for the input. I’m new and prolly too eager!

I looked it up and I think it is only for 11mm rope. It's major benefit is being rated to support 2 people which is overkill for saddlehunting, IMHO. If you plan to SRT, attaching a sling from your ascender to your bridge provides a backup. I have used 5 different mechanical belay devices for SRT and they all work fine with 9mm rope. I have a bunch of videos here on what I have found.

If your looking for a safeguard replacement/alternative look into a bill birdie. It is very similar i know of a couple guys using them!

Is the main reason people are going to the smaller diameter ropes, like the oplux, a weight issue? Or is there a better durability with the smaller diameter ropes?
