Deer and water

I don't know if it's got any truth to it whatsoever but I've heard multiple stories from random people thru the years about big old swamp bucks that hooves half rotted off from never leaving the water living deep in the swamp

I've seen hooves that appeared to have never touched a solid surface. Long and curled.

Water is pretty prevalent around here. That does not mean a water hole in the middle of a large forested area won't be productive.

No matter what it is....food, water, cover, etc......the name of the game is to hunt the least available. The "limiting" factor.

Where I hunt, their are so many little creeks and drainages that I just always assumed water was too plentiful for the deer to prioritize as far as location/movement. But maybe I'm wrong. I've never seen a deer trail that is obviously going to a watering hole either.

Water is more of a barrier than an attractant around here. It's not a hard barrier as deer will swim/wade even they feel the need. Out west water probably is something you need to pay more attention to as an attractant.

Yes, our deer will wade it pretty deep if they need too. Water is more of a barrier to the average hunter than the average deer, thankfully.
