Location
Where the skys are so blue!
I'm looking for a list of institutions that conduct research and publish findings related to wildlife management, with an emphasis on game animals, east of the Mississippi River. I'm also interested in any journals or other publications related to that topic.

I know some local ones, and figured you guys might be aware of ones local to you that I'm unaware of. If you could provide:

  • The name
  • The location
  • General research focus
I'd be very appreciative. Got something I'm stewing on.

Off the top of my head Ms. State, UT, and seems like I have read some stuff from Clemson. There are some skewls up north that have a good bit of information too or are you primarily looking for southeastern references?

Yes...ish

Highest interest in research conducted in:
  • Alabama
  • Mississippi
  • Tennessee
  • Georgia
  • Florida
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
Medium interest in research conducted in:

  • Louisiana
  • Arkansas
  • Missouri
  • Kentucky
  • West Virginia
  • Virginia
Lowest (but still present) interest in the rest of the states generally east of the Mississippi.

Clemson has some good wildlife programs. Check out Dr Grant Wood . Good luck

I generally consider the guys at MSU deer lab and Dr. Craig Harper to be the best of the best as it relates to deer but you didnt specifically state just deer.

Yep. Interested in deer, but also turkey, waterfowl, small game, and general wildlife biology.
Lots of folks will prolly point you towards Dr. Mike Chamberlain as far as turkey's go. I am not a fan personally. The AGFC turkey program coordinator was one of his understudies as well. Both highly educated on turkeys but some of what they hold fast too holds water like screen door. For waterfowl info, you might check DU and Delta Waterfowl for sources. For quail, I would prolly look geographically at the universities from Auburn around to South Carolina. I would expect pretty much all of the land grant universities to have good general wildlife biology information available.

I’ll throw Murray State University into the mix here in western KY. Not a great big school but a very solid wildlife biology program and is affordable. I’m friends with several of the faculty and they are great folks. With the lakes and rivers being close by there is an emphasis on aquatic research but it’s a great program in general.

Now you've hurt my feelings . . . no love for us Yankees? :tearsofjoy:

Dr. Craig Harper at UT Knoxville is the habitat and forage guru. His books are excellent as are many of his findings in the world of early successional plant communities

Following. I’m not sure exactly what you’re trying to learn about deer behavior or human behavior as it relates to deer or both and I realize these are not primarily studying the south but it is the east and on public State game lands and most of their research is generic enough to apply to any region or area in my estimation. The folks at Penn State are doing a lot of good research with their Deer Forest Study which is supremely interesting to me. Cornell’s Human Dimension Unit studies hunter activity and assists our NYS DEC with hunter surveys, hunter, trapper surveys, game count surveys etc. Also NDA’s Kip Adam’s studied at the University of New Hampshire’s wildlife management program and speaking of the NDA they have a wealth of information as well. Ozoga’s stuff out of the University of Michigan is well regarded as is Dr. James Kroll’s and Dr. Grant Woods stuff. These are my off the cuff suggestions.
