Different carabiners?

Ok, I added the Ropeman 1 ascenders to my tree line and to my lineman's belt. Have not climbed or put the saddle back on a tree since adding. just messed around a little here at the house. Question....the carabiners that came with the Kestrel saddle will fit in the Ropeman but they are not round so they ride funny. Plus they are a tad too big, in my opinion for the hole size in the Ropeman. It seems to make the ropes ride all the way at the top of the teeth. I like the ropes as they are on the saddle so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a different carabiner that will work as well safety wise but won't be such a tight fit in the Ropeman hole? Thanks guys. (gals??)

This is what I got last week for the exact same reason: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K8RDZ1A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I liked that it's auto-locking, relatively light, and pretty much the same size as those that came with the kestrel. I like the large size so there's a wide opening to get into the loops. As far as I can tell, it's rated sufficiently strength-wise, though I'm new to this too so one of the gurus might say otherwise.

I'll have to look closely at that fit. I'm guessing you are worried about it not having enough bite and slipping. I've used that same caribiner on my linemans belt for the last two years and have never had an issue. I also have a William on my tether and have tried a couple of different ones for tether and bridge. The Fusions that come with the Aerohunter have worked so well I've considered picking up a couple more.

That looks very close to the one that came with my Evo and Kestrel. Maybe they've changed what it's shipped with? I'll compare this afternoon.

This is the one that came with my kestrel: https://www.amazon.com/Fusion-Climb...d=1522077241&sr=8-5&keywords=fusion+carabiner

It's the same brand and nearly identical, though the shaft one that one is somewhat flat. It's more cylindrical on the replacement I bought.

On a different note, I think we may have conversed under the Welcome forum, but what part of OK are you from? I'm in the Tulsa area

You will find that more and more carabiners are being designed with a flat/d-bar (as i call it) apparently provides more strength. I used petzl williams style biners last year which worked well. I recently switched to the rock exotica pirate which is a round bar design. The only reason really for the switch was the actual carabiner is smaller and comes in all black which i prefer.

The ones I have don't have the knurled barrel. Theres a good pic of the biner in my Kestrel for sale post.

I'm NE of OKC outside of Arcadia.

Looking at the biner collection again, I have one of the biners in your link. Probably the one that came with the Kestrel. The other two like in my pic must have come with the EVO. The two biners have SMC stamped and have a flat side, and are what I've been using, but neither seem to be too big for the Ropeman.

I want smaller carabiners. I like them to be smaller and lighter. I have been trying to find the thread where justsomedude had recommended some but haven’t found it yet.

It is rated for 25Kn or 5400lbs so unles you are a really big boy they should be plenty strong enough. You said you bought these for the same reason I mentioned but then said they are close to the same thing originally supplied with the Kestrel. So do these fit the Ropeman better?

Yes, they fit the ropeman much better. Where the one that came with the kestrel is kind of flat and wide, the metal on this one is truly round/cylindrical. The diameter on it is less than the length of the widest part of the one that came with the kestrel.

still easy to use with one hand and locks securely?

I believed tethrydnation.com sells a carabineer designed for the ropeman 1. It is the wild country assault lite.

I prefer rock exotica rock o or petzl ok biners for climbing and saddle hunting.

Watch the locking mechanism these fusion carabiners. I had one for two months on my key ring. One day I chucked it into the garage maybe 15-20 feet, and the lock doesn't work anymore.

Now two things. I know this is careless, worse than standard use, and abuse of the product (which is why I did not seek warranty replacement). I never intended to use it for climbing. But it doesn't inspire confidence in the product.
