So I grew up squirrel hunting and didn't truly start deer hunting until I was in my twenties. On probably my first true deer hunts, I had gone to some family property for the weekend and got put in a treestand in an oak flat alone with my 20ga Remington 870 youth model with a handful of buckshot shells. Well after a few hours of seeing nothing but squirrels, I decided I was gonna wait until a few of them were good and close and then at least take home some meat. Well I had two or three in one tree playing together and decided now is the time and I start blasting away. When my dad came to pick me up a short while later, he said "Son, how many were there? Did you get it?" When I produced a single fox squirrel, he just laughed and said "You can't kill deer if you only shoot at squirrels. I thought you had a herd of them come in and you was giving them hell." Well from then on I try to only shoot at deer when I deer hunt, key word "try".
