Doyles Gear hoist worth the bulk?

That’s ”reel” slick! I looked at one similar, a scuba diving reel and probably the best of both worlds for an ounce counter. But I just figure 8 mine. However, I grab both ends and figure 8 both strands at once, so it’s like doing 20’ instead of 40’. Still deploys tangle free.

Make sure you get the DF48 the other reels are considerably bigger, but I guess still smaller than a Doyles. Best price I found on a quick google was 27.99.

I have 3 in 3 different packs I use throughout the season. I don't leave the ground without them. It is a 1st world problem that I will always use. I have tried dynaglide, Paracord, dog leash, climbing with things on my back, you name it. All lead back to the Doyle's. I am also not a person to wimp out over a couple extra ounces

I always thought they werent worth it. I caved bought one for this coming year. I obviously haven't tried it yet but I easily have the room and I think Im really gonna like it.

I decided to get one a few years ago over all the hype. Glad I did! I like it so much, I got an extra one and modded my pack for it so it's permanent (burnt a hole on the water bottle pocket and installed a grommet so it free flows).

I was in the market for one, and just got really fast at figure-8 ing my dynaglide, now there’s just not a need. The key is to make a “hang loose” symbol with your thumb and pinky, always clawing the thumb and pinky forward to get that 8. Then just fold over, slide in your front pant pocket, don’t get fancy hitching the ends. I’ll admit that most nights I’ll just shove it in my pocket and rewrap it at home.

I have used mule tape for years. It slides over your finger without burning when letting stuff down. Got the Doyle's last year end of the season like it so for.

I liked it the first and only season I used it. Gotta watch the knot because it will come untied and your bow will come crashing down to the ground in a hurry! The rope will also go inside the reel and then comes the fun part…taking it apart without it exploding in your hand. Wear safety glasses! If you’ve ever tried to fix a tape measure that got pulled out too far, same concept except under more spring tension. There’s a Doyle’s that has been laying in pieces on my bench for two years now…

The Kentucky bow rope doesn’t seem to get tangled near as much as paracord.

a couple of times but always after I removed the knot and end piece to thread it through a pack or pouch and I let it slip. Usually, I can get it fixed up and rewound in about 5 minutes and if it’s released in there I have found zero risk of “explosion”

You’re a safer man than I am then because mine exploded shot parts all over the place. My main point was, even though I got off on a tangent was “Watch the knot.”

I have one but don’t really use it much anymore. It’s a bit too bulky and heavy for what I need. I’ll say it works as intended though.

it works so good I had to stop using it with a traditional bow. I’d start climbing my tree and it would want to pick up my bow while climbing! Lol

What I use now is one of the first things I bought myself for bow hunting. It’s an old strapper retriever with a flat strap and manual wind. Works great and is light maybe 4 ounces. What’s old becomes new again!!

Don't forget, they make two different models. One that uses a rope (model 230) and one that uses a strap (5w30).

Try some 4mm accessory cord, figure eighted.
Doesn't tangle like para cord, is larger than dynaglide, so it is more comfortable pulling and lowering.

Definitely worth the extra weight. Just like alot of guys on here, I have tried many different options as well and I always end up going back to the Doyle's. The only thing that I would change if I had to buy another one would be to buy the one with the cord and not the webbing. The webbing is not terrible but it will catch the wind on really windy days.

In my opinion no. I carry about 40 feet of 7/64 amsteel that I use as a bow hoist rope/pull down cord. It doesn't stretch or tangle like Paracord and theoretically could be used to safely get myself out of a tree if I somehow drop my rappel rope etc. Likely will never use it as such, but it's smaller/lighter/more packable and has potential dual purpose, even if it's just to yank my rope out of the tree.

I've used one for 2 years now. I attached it to backpack so always with me. I do like it and feel it's easier than always fighting a tangled mess of pull ropes.
