Everyone should try DRT. It's a great foundation for a rope climber. I did it for 12 years but have moved on. No matter what knot or device you're using for an MRS system:
1. You are still on a 2:1 system, which means that if you pull 18in, you only move 9in. And so its slow progress compared to a 1:1 system. I find the pace to be annoying but if it doesn't bother ya, it really doesn't matter because we're not going that high.
2. The friction of a rope moving in a crotch reduces its efficiency compared to methods like SRT or JRB, and rough on the rope. That's why climbing a Leaning Tree is a hassle.... because you really can't get any hip thrust, and it really helps to have it to overcome the friction. I like being able to climb leaners as easily as straight trees. But if you only climb straight trees, it's not that big of a deal.
These days, I prefer to climb with no gloves and on smaller, thinner, lighter ropes. Having a handle for each hand as well as the Footloop just makes it easier on the hands. I am not anti-DRT. In fact I'm happy every time somebody gets on the ropes. And whenever they decide they want to try something different, the other methods will still be there.
